The Mailbag provides a coordinated, non-duplicative source of information for local public health professionals, including announcements, events, tools, resources, and jobs. This free service is designed with the following audiences in mind: SCHSAC members, CHS administrators, public health directors, local public health staff, MDH staff, and friends of local public health in Minnesota. Newcomer Tuberculosis Guidance for Health Professionals

The Minnesota Department of Health has published a health care provider guide containing tuberculosis screening recommendations for patients who are newcomers without official immigration status. The Minnesota Cancer Alliance is seeking feedback for the next Cancer Plan!

Provide feedback by taking the survey! https://forms.office.com/g/Wi5xgQw0HL This will help the Minnesota Cancer Alliance prioritize what to include in the next Cancer Plan. The Minnesota Cancer Alliance is developing a new cancer plan to launch in 2025! The Minnesota Cancer Plan is a document, reflecting the ideas of community members and experts, that guides work priorities for those in cancer-related healthcare, research, non-profits, and government (https://mncanceralliance.org/cancer-plan/). We hope that the Cancer Plan aligns work across sectors, to improve efforts to reduce the burden of cancer for all Minnesotans. For this effort, we value diverse perspectives to ensure that the new plan covers all important challenges in addressing cancer across Minnesota. Diabetes and depression are both conditions that can have a serious impact on the person with either of the conditions. When someone has both, the struggles can be amplified. There are many issues to consider when both diseases are present and physicians, care coordinators, social workers, counselors, and other caregivers can play a vital role in helping to manage both conditions. This conference will address the traditional uses of tobacco and commercial tobacco impact in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities across the United States. A disparate proportion of AI/AN communities use commercial tobacco compared to other racial/ethnic groups in the United States. High prevalences of commercial tobacco use among AI/AN Tribes are directly reflected in the disproportionate rates of chronic diseases in AI/AN populations. There is an urgent need to bring Tribes together at a national level to educate one another on successes and setbacks in commercial tobacco prevention and control among AI/ANs. The conference will emphasize AI/AN persons returning to a healthy relationship with tobacco, the importance of creating health equity, and provide an opportunity for networking and collaboration.
