State Trauma Advisory Council (STAC) Updates

STAC approves new Level 3 and Level 4 Hospital Designation Criteria

The STAC approved the Designation Criteria for both Level 3 and Level 4 Trauma Hospitals at the December meeting. These criteria are available on the Trauma Hospital Portal, as well as the Trauma System website. Hospitals can start implementing changes right away. Full implementation is required by January 1, 2027. Education sessions and resources will follow.

New STAC location for 2026

The STAC will be meeting in a new location beginning in 2026. Join us at the Plymouth Community Center, 14800 34th Ave. N, Plymouth, MN 55447 on the following dates:

  • March 3
  • June 2
  • September 15
  • December 8

Trauma Performance Improvement (PI) and Education

Trauma Medical Director (TMD) Orientation

MDH is hosting an optional TMD/Co-TMD orientation training. No registration needed. Join the TMD Orientation sessions (Microsoft Teams meeting).

Objectives include:

  • Trauma System overview
  • Introduction to the TMD role
  • Understanding the Designation Criteria
  • Basics of the PI Review Process
  • Sharing of Resources

Training sessions will be offered virtually from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. quarterly on the following dates:

  • March 12
  • June 10
  • September 8
  • December 10

Trauma Program 101 Course offered in April

Trauma Program 101 will be held Thursday, April 16, 2026 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. Please visit Trauma Program 101 Registration to sign up.

All trauma program leaders (trauma program managers/coordinators, trauma medical directors/co-medical directors, CEO/administrators) of Level 3 and Level 4 Trauma Hospitals are encouraged to attend. Nursing CEUs will be offered.

Highlights of the course include:

  • Overview of the state trauma system
  • Understand the designation criteria as a framework of the trauma program
  • Learn basic trauma performance improvement (PI) concepts
  • Access educational and networking opportunities for continuous growth of your trauma program

This course will also be offered on Thursday, October, 15, 2026 at Buffalo Hospital in Buffalo. Registration for this offering is not yet open.

We will be reviewing the new trauma hospital designation criteria using the criteria crosswalk tool, highlighting the recent changes and implementation timelines. 

Level 3 and Level 4 criteria reviews will be offered separately.

New PI tools and sample documents available

MDH PI tools and sample documents have been added to the Trauma Hospital Portal for hospital trauma program use. These documents have been updated to match the new Level 3 and Level 4 trauma hospital designation criteria. Additional documents will be added as they are finalized.
