KCFW Kalispell Area First Alert 7 p.m. Forecast


First Alert 48 Hour Forecast

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY tonight for all areas west of the divide, including Missoula, Butte and Kalispell.  Additional snowfall of a trace to 2 inches in the valleys and 3 to 6 inches in the mountains.  Although not under an advisory, all areas east of the divide, including Bozeman, will experience similar amounts of snow.

WINTER STORM WARNING for Lookout Pass where 3 to 7 inches of snow and gusty winds will occur.

A very moist northwest flow continues to bring snow to western Montana.  Periods of snow tonight with additional accumulations.  Flurries and snow showers Friday and Saturday, with some additional accumulations.  Lows in the upper 10s to lower 20s with highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

A possible major winter storm with blizzard conditions will be possible Sunday and Monday.  Models are indicating an arctic front will stall across west central and southwest Montana.  Pacific moisture will overrun it, bringing heavy snow along with w! indy conditions to the region.  Stay tuned!

First Alert 48 Hour Forecast

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY tonight for Gallatin, Broadwater, Jefferson and Meagher Counties in southwest Montana, including Bozeman.  A trace to 2 inches in the valleys and 3 to 8 inches in the mountains.

WINTER STORM WATCH late Saturday through Sunday and Monday for most of western Montana.  Snowfall of 4 to 14 inches along with gusty winds.

We will continue to see areas of snow and flurries through tomorrow.  Most additional accumulations will occur east of the divide, although minor accumulations are possible about anywhere west of the divide.  Otherwise, mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 10s and lower 20s with highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

A major winter storm will develop across the region Saturday night and continue Sunday and Monday.  An arctic front will move into the area and stall along I-90 by Sunday.   Pacific moisture overrunning the cold air will bring the threat of very heavy snow, especially in the Missoula, northern Bitter! root and southern Mission Valleys southeast to near Butte.  Within this area, some places will have the possibility of more than a foot of snow.  Gusty winds up to 30 and 40 mph with create blizzard conditions in some areas along with blowing and drifting snow.  Snowfall of 6 to 12 inches in the Missoula area, 4 to 8 inches in the Butte and Bozeman areas and 2 to 6 inches in the Kalispell area.

Temperatures will fall to the upper 10 and 20s for highs by Sunday and lows dropping to the single digits above and below zero by early next week.

    WINTER STORM WARNING from early Sunday morning until Monday evening for the following counties: Gallatin, Broadwater, Jefferson, Lewis And Clark, Meagher, Silver Bow, Deer Lodge, Powell, Granite, "Ravalli, Missoula, Lake, Mineral, Sanders, Flathead.

    Here is what you can expect for snowfall totals:

    Flathead Valley: 3 to 6 inches

    Thompson Falls area: 10 to 14 inches

    Missoula, Butte, Bitterroot Valley, Swan Valley, Philipsburg, Blackfoot River area: 8 to 14 inches

    Bozeman, Townsend, Whitehall, Boulder:  4 to 8 inches

    Madison, Lemhi, Beaverhead, and Lincoln counties: 3 to 8 inches.

    Mountain Passes including Homestake, Macdonald, Rogers, Lolo, Lost Trail, and Lookout: 18 inches to 2 feet

    Area winds: 10 to 20 mph gusting 30 to 40 mph. Pockets of whiteout and blizzard conditions are likely.

    An area of snow bands will hang around the Bitterroot Valley, the Butte area, and Beaverhead and Lemhi Counties tod! ay. Light accumulations are likely. This band will hang around the divide from the Beaverhead Mountains over to West Yellowstone tonight.

    We are still on track for a significant winter storm which begins tonight. Light snow will develop in Northwest Montana tonight as an arctic front crosses the divide. Winds in some areas such as the Badrock and Hellgate Canyons will see sustained winds over 20 mph once the front moves in. This front combined with another surge of Pacific moisture is an ideal snow making scenario.  An intense snow band will develop near the I-90 corridor. Heavy snow up to a foot and whiteout conditions are likely under this snow band. If you are within 50 miles of I-90 between Whitehall and Lookout Pass, prepare to receive heavy snow.

    Cold air is coming behind this front too. Temperatures will fall to the upper 10 and 20s for highs by Sunday and lows dropping to the single digits above and below zero by early next week. The colder temperatures ! will aid in producing higher snow totals from this storm.

    WINTER STORM WARNING through early Monday for west central and southwest Montana where you see the pink shaded areas.  This includes I-90 from Lookout Pass through Missoula to Butte and Bozeman and #93 from the Mission Valley south to the Bitterroot Valley.  Snowfall totals by Monday will range from 4" to 12", with the highest totals 20 miles either side of I-90 in the Missoula area.  Heavier totals will also occur north and east of Bozeman, including the White Sulphur Springs and Livingston areas. The Kalispell area is looking at 1" to 3" of snow.  WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY where you see the blue shaded areas, including Lincoln, Beaverhead and Madison Counties.  Snowfall of 1 to 4 inches in these areas.


    Snow will increase tonight before diminishing by mid day Monday.  Gusty winds will create whiteout conditions on I-90 from the Hellgate Canyon in Missoula to Bearmouth, on #200 from Clearwater Junction to Ovando and #12 from Garrison to MacDonald Pass.
    After the break in the snow Monday afternoon, another wave of Pacific moisture will interact with a stalled arctic front to bring more accumulating snow, mainly along and south of I-90 on Monday night and Tuesday morning.

    WINTER STORM WARNING tonight for the Missoula and Bitterroot Valleys.  The warning extends from the Thompson Falls area east through Seeley Lake and across the divide into the Boulder and Townsend areas.  Snowfall of 4 to 6 inches, with 8 inches in the foothills and mountains.

    WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for most all other areas along and south of I-90, including Butte and Bozeman.  Snowfall of 2 to 5 inches, with heavier amounts around West Yellowstone.

    WIND CHILL ADVISORY tonight for the Flathead and Mission Valleys, including Kalispell and Polson.  East winds 10 to 20 mph creating wind chills of -15 to -25.

    Another surge of Pacific moisture will overrun arctic air at the surface.  That means another round of snow tonight and early Tuesday, mainly along and south of I-90.  Partial clearing and gusty winds will allow temperatures to plummet across the northwest.  Lows in the single digits and lower 10s, although around -1 in Kalispell.

    Lingeri! ng flurries and snow showers across southwest Montana on Tuesday.  Partly to mostly sunny northwest.  Highs well below normal with 20s across the region.

    With partial clearing tomorrow night and snow cover, lows will plummet area wide by Wednesday morning to single digits above and below zero.

    Milder with snow or rain by Thursday followed by more snow and turning much colder by the weekend.

    Frigid conditions are expected across all of western Montana tonight with clear skies and patchy freezing fog.  Lows ranging from 0 to 17 below zero.  

    Partly to mostly sunny but cold on Wednesday with highs in the mid 20s to mid 30s.

    Another major winter storm and arctic outbreak is expected late week and this weekend.  Another arctic front will push into the region by early Friday.  Pacific moisture overrunning the cold air will bring snow, with early estimates of 4 to 12 inches across the region.  After a brief warm up into the 30s on Thursday, highs will drop to the single digits and 10s by the weekend with lows back below zero.

      First Alert 48 Hour Forecast

      BLIZZARD WATCH Thursday night and Friday for the Missoula, Flathead, Mission and Bitterroot Valleys along with the Seeley Lake and Potomac area north to Glacier Park.  Snowfall of 2 to 8 inches with northeast winds 15 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, creating whiteout conditions.  Dangerous wind chills will fall well below zero.

      WINTER STORM WATCH all of southwest Montana east of the divide.  This includes the Bozeman area.  Snowfall of 4 to 8 inches with 8 to 16 inches in the mountains.

      Another major winter storm will impact the region late Thursday through the weekend.  Moisture in California will move northeast into the region, bringing increasing clouds later tonight.  Areas of rain, freezing and snow will develop by Thursday afternoon.  As an arctic front moves into the area Thursday night and early Friday, all snow will fall across the region with gusty winds developing.  Accumulations are likely about everyone, although the heaviest will be ab! out 30 miles either side of I-90.  Highs will briefly warm into the 30s on Thursday before plummeting to the single digits and 10s by Saturday.  Lows will drop to the single digits below and above zero by the weekend, although the Butte and Bozeman areas will see 10s below zero.

      FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY through this evening for all areas west of the divide, including Missoula, Butte and Kalispell.  Freezing rain and snow will create treacherous driving conditions.

      BLIZZARD WARNING late tonight through Saturday  for the Missoula, Flathead, Mission and Bitterroot Valleys along with the Seeley Lake and Potomac area north to Glacier Park.  Snowfall of 2 to 8 inches with locally higher amount. Snow and wind will combine to create whiteout conditions early Friday.   East northeast winds 15-35 mph with gusts to 50 mph.

      WINTER STORM WARNING for southwest Montana.  This includes Bozeman, Butte, Boulder, Townsend, Whitehall, and surrounding mountain passes. Snowfall of 6 to 10 inches in the valleys with up to 20 inches in the mountains.

        First Alert 48 Hour Forecast

        WIND CHILL WARNING for Western Montana until 8 am Sunday. Northeast winds 15 to 35 mph with gusts up to 40 and 50 mph are expected. These winds will combine with arctic air creating dangerous wind chill readings Friday night and Saturday. Wind chill values from -10 to -30 are likely. -40 wind chill is possible in parts of Southwest Montana and along Montana 200 between Rogers Pass and Helmville.

        Another storm is set to drop in to end the weekend. Moist pacific air will cause snow to dump across the region Sunday and Monday while warming temperatures to seasonal levels. Snow will be more concentrated around Northwest Montana with totals of 4 to 8 inches by Monday night. Valleys will change over to a mix of rain and snow between late Monday and midday Tuesday. There is a possibility of freezing rain on Tuesday and Wednesday as warm air overruns cold air trapped in valleys. It will be anther wet week with waves of moisture sweeping across the state.
