Bad weather indeed equals good birds. I had a day for the ages today with my first checklist for one location over 100 species. BRANT were on the move and the bad weather, low clouds and drizzle dropped them very low. I first had a flock at Dorchester and then had a much bigger one at Upper Lisle approximately 175. Then there were 8 very late WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS that passed north. I also had a very late RED THROATED LOON in the channel in basic plumage. I also first heard and then got on 2 BLACK BELLIED PLOVERS heading south over the upper reservoir. There was an ORCHARD ORIOLE first year male, 2 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and both species of cuckoos. BLACKPOLL WARBLERS were all over as well as TENNESSEEs. I had a nice CANADA as well as MAGNOLIA and BLACK THROATED BLUE WARBLERs. Merrill creek was loaded with shorebirds. All in all I totaled 102 species for upper lisle in about 5 1/2 hours. As of this afternoon, Upper Lisle is tied with Central Park for this year with 186 species and number 5 in the state for all the NY hotspots!
