Hi mommies,

Writing this on the train to Maplewood to visit Nell and Theo! I'm concerned - Zoe hasn't pooped in a week. This has happened before, and her doctor hasn't been overly concerned - just recommended some dietary changes (more water, cooked veggies, prune juice, less binding foods, less dairy, etc). Zoe's never been in pain and she eventually poops (a lot), but we haven't been able to get her to poop more than twice a week in quite a while.

Are any of your toddlers chronically constipated, or have they had a pooping issue? Have you tried anything medicinal, or suppositories? Should I try a different doctor?

Any advice welcomed!!

Xoxo, michelle and poop-filled Zoe!

Andi is having a similar issue and I have been giving her watered down prune juice every few days and that seems to do the trick.  She isn't complaining but it's clear to me that she needs to go!  I am trying not to put pressure on her and let her decide when it's time.....

Good Luck!
Dara

Lincoln has had major poop issues for a long time!!!  He would get constipated and it would hurt him so badly to go which resulted in holding it some more- it's a vicious cycle.  We relied on Miralax in his milk and suppositories when things got really bad.  Everything I was doing didn't seem to work- water, fiber, veggies, prune juice, etc.  I tried everything....smoothies with tons of fiber rich fruit plus wheat germ/flax/prune juice didn't even do the trick.  If Zoe isn't hurting when she is going, I wouldn't really worry too much about it though!  I felt like the more I stress over Lincoln's poop, the worse it got!  Maybe that was coincidental, but hey.  We did talk to him a lot about pushing the poop out (gross I know) and how when he does he feels better!  This seemed to work because ever since he has been consistent.

Good luck!

Eve used to have major issues with that, including pain.  We did the dietary changes you mentioned, which probably helped some but didn't always seem to make a huge difference.  We also used suppositories a few times, when things seemed really tough for her, and those definitely helped.  The issues seemed to have mostly resolved themselves now - I think her problems were mostly related to her trying to hold her poop in till it got really hard and painful.

Poor constipated kiddos! Just wanted to add that Margot got constipated a bit when we started solid foods and wheat bran helped her. I would mix it in with oatmeal/oatbran/smoothies/pancakes. Bob's Red Mill makes it and it's nutritious too.

Good luck!

xx

Thanks for the helpful responses, everyone!  It's comforting to hear that Zoe's not the only one going through this.  Within an hour of my writing, Zoe had a nice poop at Nell's house, and I don't think it was any kind of food/drink in particular that got her there... she just decided it was time to go.

I like the idea of coaching her to "push it out" more regularly as a way to feel better (even though she says she feels fine), as there's obviously poop there after a couple days.  I'm also going to try adding wheat bran to her oatmeal (she loves oatmeal) and will have miralax on hand as well.  We've on occasion added prune juice to her milk and she didn't seem to mind (although lately we've cut back on milk altogether).

Fun stuff!  Have a great day, everyone!

Oh! One more thing Michelle- I cut regular milk out of Lincoln's diet and he drinks goat milk instead.  It really helped!!! And he doesn't seem to mind the slight difference in taste.
