Curious whether anyone in the group has set up a will and/or established guardians?  Is the process straightforward?  This has been on our todo list for a while...

Hi Michelle,

We did this shortly after A was born. We definitely did this. We went with a lawyer recommended by someone at Julian's work. The hardest part was figuring out who we wanted to care for our kids the rest was pretty straightforward. We also set-up a trust which makes sense for tax purposes and although my parents will have custody of our children should anything happen, we appointed really close friends to manage the trust and help with financial decisions. We also disburse funds at 18 and again at 25, so that if they go nuts, they don't blow all  of the insurance money at once.

Happy to provide name is if it helps. The attorney is somewhere in Manhattan.

Best of luck,
Lorena

Thanks, Lorena!  Did the lawyer handle both?  I'm so clueless/scared/resistant about all of this, but I know it's important especially now that we have 2 and are homeowners.  Definitely give me the name of the lawyer you used...

It is a really weird thing to do and the most unthinkable of scenarios. I completely understand.

The lawyer was absolutely helpful and basically laid out options for us. From his perspective, it was all quite standard.

Here's his info:

We handled this right after Andi was born and have already started to think about how to adapt these documents for the two kids now. We worked with one of Jon's friends and it was an easy and seamless process. I typically don't love to mix business and friendship but in this case Mike did such a great job that I feel confident in highly recommending him. He works (and lives) in NJ but he does most of the work remotely anyway. Definitely reach out and tell him we referred you. I'm sure he'll take great care of you. I'm attaching his contact information below. Good luck!

Yeah - we totally need to do this.  Pronto.  I'm still learning how to be a grownup. :)

Thanks for the info, Dara and Lorena. We haven't done this yet and I know we need to. I've been putting it off forever.
