All,

You may have seen some discussions at the tail end of last year about joining the Apache Incubator. This is something that we believe will be great for the Brooklyn project, and we have an Apache committer, Chip Childers, who has kindly volunteered to help us on our journey into and through the Incubator.

The first step is the Proposal - a document which explains about our project, how it fits into Apache, and answers many of the concerns surrounding new projects. Our proposal would be submitted to the Apache Incubator list, where it is discussed, modified, and finally voted on.

I've taken the 'template' proposal supplied by the Incubator and have begun to write Brooklyn's proposal around it. The proposal still has several blanks in it, but I would like the community's input into it now - to review and change the sections that are already written, and to supply content for the parts not yet written.

It's in the project's wiki:

Your comments and content - either on this list, or by editing the wiki - would be gratefully received!

What will happen from here - we'll discuss this proposal within our community, until we get a complete or mostly-complete document. Then, it will be moved into the Apache Incubator wiki, and introduced on the Apache incubator-general list where the Apache community will have their opportunity to discuss the proposal, which may result in further changes. [Chip, please correct me if I'm wrong!]

Please take a look at the proposal and let us know what you think - all are welcome to read it, comment on it, and contribute changes. I'm excited to be part of Brooklyn as it makes this proposal to Apache, and hope that many of you will also be excited to join in :-)

Richard.

I took a look at it this morning, and the sections that have been
completed look good.

I especially appreciate that care was taken to include the Brooklyn
marks (and that it's registered), as well as social media and domain
names. Once we get the project into the incubator, we can pull in
Shane, the VP of Brand Management to help execute the required legal
documentation for the mark transfer.

One follow up question on the mark registration: In what jurisdiction(s)
is Brooklyn a registered mark? US only? US + EU? Adding the specifics
to the proposal would be helpful.

If it's well done, likely not. Usually, the only changes will be in the
initial committers list (additions of interested and like-minded
apache "regulars"). You will also have mentors join up during the
proposal process. All of this will happen in a [DISCUSS] thread on
gen...@incubator.apache.org. Once we lock down the committers and
mentors, the proposal will be frozen in the incubator's wiki, and we'll
have them vote to accept.

I personally think that this is a fascinating project that should catch
the attention of many contributors to related Apache projects. Good
choice bringing it to the ASF!
