Hi Larry:

Is Devlin the guy that used to teach Greek declensions  by rote like:

"Vic Damone, Tone hippone"

I still remember all that stuff!

Best regards,

I have two older brothers, whom most of my friends from Prep never met, because they were both in the service during our time in high school. But my oldest brother, Dan, was a Brooklyn Prep graduate, Class of 1958; and I remember going through his old yearbooks from the 50's and seeing Mr. Devlin's photo. My Dad graduated Prep in 1931, and his yearbook was still floating around the house when we were in school, too. I won't swear to it, but I think I remember going, "Holy cow! There's Mr. Devlin - teaching at Prep in 1930!" Those are some footsteps in which I'll be glad to follow.

Doug,
I think Mike Mercurio is the only person I know (and maybe Joe Navarro, cause it used to seem to me that Joe had read about everything.) who ever actually read Remembrance of Things Past . I made through the first paragraph once.
I can remember Mr. Sullivan only vaguely, but I don't think I would ever have suspected that he was an Aretha Franklin fan. I've often reflected on how glad I am - how lucky I feel - to have been a teenager at the time when the Beatles, the great Motown hit factory, The Rascls, and Aretha Franklin (etc., etc.) were at their peak. I'm gonna risk sounding like Mr. Devlin again, but man, am I glad 'HipHop' - which I find, not only frequently offensive, but almost completely one-dimensional and musically dull - hadn't yet taken over pop music.

Don't forget Junior English scholastic Mr. Donald Sullivan- he told us Aretha was going to save music. Also made a bunch of us take a Saturday trip to the Cloisters. I used to wear a different button everyday with a slogan on it and he would always walk by my desk to get a quick glance at what is says. I remember one said "Marcel Proust is a Yenta"- he challenged me to tell him about Proust. At least I was able to tell him what a yenta was.

Anybody out there have any good stories/anecdotes/memories about some of the Scholastics that were around in our first few years at Prep? Mr Tackacs, Vinny McGuire, Gerry Reedy, Joe Rocasalvo, Mr. Mallory, others?

I've got one about Mr. Donnelly: If you recall, he was a pretty big dude, with that unpredictable glint in his eye, and who was not afraid to slam you into a locker. Well, I remember we had a JV football scrimmage vs. Brooklyn Tech at our excuse for a field at Prep. The "visitors' locker room" (such as it was), was the cafeteria. Some lineman type from Tech was coming down the corridor with his helmut in one hand, shoulder pads in the other, sees Mr. Donnelly - all 6 Feet, 3 inches of him - dressed in black (as he always was), with his round color, and the kid says, very politely, un-selfconsciously, "Hey fodda, could you open da fuckin' door?" We were standing there aghast, waiting for this kid to be clobbered; but Donnelly, as cordially as you please, says "Sure", and opens the door for the kid.

Good to see your input. How are ya? I never did have Devlin, myself. And the closest I ever got to Greek was eatin' Gyros sandwiches downtown Manhattan.

Hi Larry

Yes, still here. OK, I survived the Bush legacy. Waiting for economy to turn around. Etc.

I do remember Devlin and Vic Damone; ( I was at first confused thinking it was Fr Oppido who taught Greek but from reading the posts I remembered it was Devlin)
I also remember someone (probably Rocassalvo) playing the "Sounds of Silence" and other songs from "the graduate" in religion class.

I do envy you having lived in Montana and Alaska. Would  like to go up there. Been mostly in the Catskills, Adirondacks and Colorado.

Best regards,

Jose J. Vargas

I recall Devlin teaching Latin.  Maybe he taught both?  I recall (and may be wrong) that Fr. O taught first year, Reedy taught second year, and Devlin third (or did Devlin teach second and Reedy third?).  I forget the guy who taught fourth year. He was a nice guy, but I don't remember the class at all.  I remember Reedy coming in and speaking Latin to us the first day.  That was pretty funny.  We all looked at him like he was . . . well, talking a foreign language.  (I was going to say Greek, but I at least knew it was Latin.)

I remember the same thing. Mr. Roccasalvo, and I think maybe Mr. Reedy, and Mr McGwire were all into using things like S&G to engage their teenaged charges in topics of the day, that were relevant to faith. I remember really "getting" (thanks to Reedy or Rocasalvo) the profundity of a song by Simon & Garfunkel called 7 O'Clock News/ Silent Night.

Hi Dennis

TV was Livio Llinares and others.  I worked with Livio's brother a few years ago who said he was in DC still in TV. But I haven't seen him in forty years.
I'm an international banker 35 years.

Yes agreed Jesuits are radical. They were the ones responsible for the Spanish Inquisition, and are the only priests that perform exorcisms.

I always like to tell the story that William Peter Blatty, the author of the Exorcist (about Jesuits fighting devils) graduated from Brooklyn Prep HS.
He must have had some experience at BP  to write the scariest novel of our time. Wondering which one of his teachers was the model for fr. Merrin.

Fr. Reedy taught 2nd year - his faovrite passage was the speech of the 10th legion's standard bearer as the Roman's first took the shore of Britannea.
Mr. D taught Yr 3 and the merits of Cicero and Icarus. Garry Swords and I sat in the back in the last row by the window, Mike Mercurio sat in the front seat in the row to our right.

Perhaps we should use our professional skills to track him down and get him to the dinner since Frank seems to have a thing about the little twerp. I'm no shrink, but I'm starting to wonder. Think Mr. C went on to be a body double for Rick Moranis in "Honey I Shrunk the Kids."

I have over six hundred emails in my BP folder I'm slowly wading through.  Got the Makata shirt.  What part of Alaska are you in now, Larry?  MVS.

I did ok for a couple of years taking Latin, so I figured Greek would be cool. Then I ran into Mr. Nebot. It seemed like he was already 102 in 1968. Not the most patient of fellows for guys like me who didn't quite get it first time around. Failed miserably first term, and bailed. That's how I must have ended up with J.R. O'Connell, learning the fine art of enunciation (in English, thankfully).

I do recall one morning when they played Barry McGuire (no relation) singing 'Eve of Destruction' as a mushroom cloud from an A-bomb test ballooned onto the TV screen home room.

Marcus, a, um
I am up on what is known as The North Slope. Presently, a little west of Prudhoe Bay, at one of the so-called 'satellite' oil fields, called Milne Point.. We are right on the Arctic ocean, well above the Arctic Circle, down the coast from Point Barrow, the northern most point in the United States. (In fact, I can see Russia from my room!)

You may leave here for four days in space, but when you return it's the same old place.

I was wondering whether you ever flew on one of my airplanes. I have had airplanes leased to Peninsula Airlines (Penair) out of Anchorage and Big Sky Airlines out of Billings over the years.

  Fellas,

Time marches on, and now the reunion dinner is just one day away. I had a few things I had hoped to post here before the event, but didn't get around to. (Oh well - most of it was probably hot air or stuff about popular music). But I did want to say this something about one particular topic. I searched some of the back emails because I thought I remembered one fom Jose telling Bob J that he envied his living in Florida, and me my living in Montana. I do love Montana, but, I'll tell you, I still love Brooklyn too. But here are the guys I envy; and here is an aspect of your lives  that may be, at least in part, a legacy of values instilled at Brooklyn Prep. It is this: I am awed by the beautiful, loving, loyal, faithful, solid, enduring marriages so many of you have. I can think of at least five of you right off the top of my head who are married to girls you were seeing when we were in Prep. Several others of you - most recently, Jim Baillet have told us of your wives of 30+ years. This is, as you know, a rare phenomenon these days.

Part of the sacramental aspect of marriage is the public nature of the love between husband and wife. Your love and devotion to others is not just a private thing, but rather shines like a beacon (is a "sign") for all who know you as to what is possible. I don't know if it gets said enough, but you should be proud of this. Perhaps it sounds odd, but I - who have never been married - take pride in your commitments.  And I frequently mention to others the many long term stable relationships among my classmates.

I know well that it may not have always been an easy road. I also know, that not everyone can be as fortunate as to find the right mate first time around. I also admire those of you who have "tried again" and made a go of a second marriage ( and the ol' "third time's a charm" cats). Congratulaions to all of you, and thank you.

Jose J. Vargas

Hi Larry:

Is Devlin the guy that used to teach Greek declensions  by rote like:

"Vic Damone, Tone hippone"

I still remember all that stuff!
