Classmates,If only had remembered things I read and was taught in the classroom while at Brooklyn Prep as well asI do these words (composed by "The Thomas Jefferson of MAKATA", one Michael Mercurio):
"We the members of this fine and upstanding athletic club, do hereby on this Sixth day of March,
Nineteen Hundred Sixty Nine, declare ourselves the official and sovereign Makata Athletic Club."
So, on this 6th day of March, 2023 (Man, you guys must be old !) I salute my fellow geezers.
I see that our classmate Ken Charles is to be honored as Alumnus of the Year at the annual Alumni Dinner this May.
CONGRATULATIONS, KEN.I hadn't been planning on coming east in the next 6 months or so, but this may call for another big turnout for our class.
I'll be anxious to hear from any of you as to whether you plan to go to.
I know that many of the e-mail addresses I have for classmates are outdated (the addresses, not the classmates.
Well, then again...). If you happen to know of anyone you think may not have received this but might want to, please forward it.
Happy MAKATA Day,Larry Garde
p.s. There is one other item that sticks in my brain about March 6th. It happens to be the birthday of one of my all-time
favorite musicians. He was born in 1923, so today would have been his 100th ! I wish I had known and been able to
appreciate the playing and writing of Wes Montgomery while we were at Prep. He was still playing club dates in NYC
during our time there. He died of a heart attack at age 45, just before our junior year ended, so - even though I, and several of you, did get
to hear Cream and Jimi Hendrix live - I never did get to hear Wes play in person. My appreciation for his music has only
grown in the succeeding years. As it happens I host the occasional music program on Montana Public Radio; and tonight I'll be doing an hour of Wes
(8:00 - 9:00, Mountain Time). Streaming at: https://www.mtpr.org/listen<MAKATA, The Early Days .jpg><Kenny .jpg><We knew him when... .jpg>
