Registration Forms are now available at http://www.brooklyndragons.org
for Fall 2011, we will likely be starting up mid September, still
waiting on park permits.

Flag Registration: http://www.brooklyndragons.org/?q=node/9
Tackle Registration: http://www.brooklyndragons.org/?q=node/14

Flag will be relatively unchanged in structure, we will have two
coaches joining us to coach the flag squads, and we are still waiting
on a permit but we will be somewhere near Prospect Park/Park Slope.

Tackle will be Wednesday practice, Weekend game. Games will most
likely be Sunday mornings but there may be a few here and there on a
Saturday. We will have at least one tackle coach from PRUSA. League is
tentatively us, Manhattan, Pelham and Greenwich. I will know more by
the end of the week. Players unable to make mid week practice but have
a history with the Club are welcome to play, but preference will be
shown to those able to make the coaching drills.

We are hoping that all programs will be run out of JJ Byrne/Washington
Park which is 5th Avenue and 3rd Street in Brooklyn, but this is not
definite. ( http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/B111/ )

Tackle players MUST have mouthguards. Boil in the bag or speak to your
dentist, but it needs to be taken care of. Junior padding/protection
is allowed, here's some links:

I know the sound of tackle rugby can be scary. And yes, participants
should expect at least a bloody nose or a good knock on the head once
in a while. Injuries are not impossible. Safety is my number one
concern, and moving into tackle we will lose some of the casual aspect
of the program.

Please note, the program has stepped up a lot this year, we have taken
on three professional coaches and I will be requiring mouthguards and
waivers like never before. If you have any concerns whatsoever please
E-mail me.

As a general reminder, see this quote from Lyle J. Micheli, MD past
president of the American College of Sports Medicine:

"I performed one of the first studies of rugby injuries in the United
States, which showed that compared to football, the incidence of
injury in rugby is quite low (10 percent in American club rugby
compared to 52 percent in NCAA college football). My study was
published in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Sports Medicine.
Subsequent studies have supported my results.

It would be disingenuous to suggest that rugby players never get
injured. However, based on the numerous studies that have been done,
the scientific conclusion we must reach is that rugby is not as
injurious as certain other contact and collision sports that most of
us believe deserve NCAA status, and is a relatively safe sport in the
panoply of athletic endeavours available to our young men and women."
