M2 Release

Hi.

I'd like to get the pull request #1299 (Misc improvements and tidy up) into the M2 release if possible. I know @alasdairhodge looked at it, and I addressed those comments already. I have pushed some more updates that continue to rationalise the SSH driver code in the Java based entities, so a quick review would be appreciated.
