Neighbors!

Please consider attending this public meeting (see flyer below for specifics) and passing along this information.  Members of the 10 Brookline Place Committee and town officials will discuss the proposal to rezone this property for  potential life science laboratories and other uses. Construction of this will have resounding impacts on the neighborhood.

This meeting is a chance for you to learn about the proposal and provide important neighborhood feedback.

I am not endorsing the proposal, but on the committee with the aim of offering feedback and ensuring the proposal is as beneficial for the neighborhood as possible.

I hope to see you there.

Warmly,
LL

Hope this note finds you all well. A few notes of interest that concern Brookline Village residents and businesses:

1: NEW NEWS
Up-zoning Harvard Street and development parameters: There will be a public access Select Board meeting TONIGHT to discuss greater clarity as to the objectives of a form-based zoning pilot that has to do with a state mandate for affordable housing near public transportation. The issue is complicated & driven by the state 9an article inthe GLobe sheds light on this here: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/02/03/business/new-housing-law-takes-effect-most-towns-fall-line-now/ but one thing is clear, that the Town has its sights on up-zoning Harvard Street from Allston into Brookline Village. There was a close vote by the Select Board last week around this, and concerns remain that the mandatory State guidelines were flawed and are forcing Brookline and other MBTA communities into a rushed process with uncertain impacts - which will be discussed at the meeting - I cannot attend but will be sending a letter, and encourage residents that feel strongly about the state of the commercial district (along with business owners) to attend, learn more, and offer comment as possible. You can view the Planning Department presentation, public comment and Select Board discussion and last week’s votes on this video, beginning at 1:30:30.

2: NOT-AS-NEW-NEWS
Towards the end of 2022, and after nearly a year of committee meetings (in which I took part) which included public engagement to review and evaluate the proposed rezoning and use modifications to 10 Brookline Place, the Brookline Select Board has accepted the 10 Brookline Place Committee’s recommendation to postpone indefinitely further committee work on this rezoning and new use proposal.

3: WILDLIFE NEWS
Coyote sightings may have increased recently in the Brookline Village area, I saw one on the residential sidewalk of Station Street this week and the town set up a link for sightings: https://www.brooklinema.gov/1047/Coyotes-in-Brookline. I did a little reading on coyotes and urban populations and it’s interesting, you can learn more here: https://www.nps.gov/articles/netn-species-spotlight-eastern-coyote.htm - and for what to do in an encounter (this website is thorough and thoughtful) https://urbancoyoteresearch.com/coyote-info/how-avoid-conflicts-coyotes
Rodents: See https://www.brooklinema.gov/2424/Rodent-Resources Also note there is a Rodent Control Action Plan in the works.

Dear friends, neighbors, and colleagues:

The biggest place to make a difference is in local elections, and ours is coming up next Tuesday, May 7th.

Municipalities are increasingly complex and every vote matters. My vote is with level-headed leadership, candidates balanced in their approach to community and problem solving, candidates who value diversity of thought, are steady and resourceful, with demonstrated ability to explore multiple needs and aspirations and find ways to collaborate.

For general election information, hours, precinct info & location check here:

Early voting is happening; for dates, times and locations click here:

I’ve endorsed two candidates in competitive races:

  • Bernard Greene - Bernard is the most experienced member of the Select Board and current Chair. He is down to earth, insightful, thoughtful; a leader with substance. I’ve seen him at work in a number of circumstances and tend to part ways a little more inspired & optimistic. Let’s keep his depth of experience on the Select Board: www.bernardgreene.org
  • Carolyn Thall - I have known Carolyn since the 1990’s. She is a curious, clear, independent thinker who understands how both the Town and Schools function - and how their budgets work and interact. Let’s bring her thoughtful, deliberate approach in to elevate our schools - and therefore communities: www.carolynthall.com

Two other candidates I’m impressed with are David Pearlman for Select Board and Jesse Hefter for School Committee.

Brookline by Design has endorsements for the above candidates, as well as for the Housing Authority Board and Town Meeting Members, who are our elected representative body.

Brookline by Designadvocates for inclusive community participation in a thoughtful urban planning process that realistically assesses the consequences of potential outcomes to achieve shared goals around affordability, sustainability, green space and livability.

Please stay engaged in the democratic process - especially if you live in Brookline... or if you’re on this and simply work in Brookline, feel free to share!

Warmly,

Liz Linder

Neighbors - this just in from Erin Chute // Public Works:

This message was sent to Town Meeting Members to share an update regarding the significant winter storm forecast to impact Brookline beginning Sunday, January 25, 2026. AlertBrookline notifications have been sent, but please share this with your constituents and neighborhood associations as appropriate.

Current forecasts indicate extremely hazardous conditions, including heavy snowfall, strong winds, and limited visibility. This storm will require substantial time and resources to safely reopen roadways and pedestrian routes, and progress may be slower than residents are accustomed to during less severe events.  To prepare and respond, the Department of Public Works will have more than 130 employees and contractors working throughout the storm and its aftermath, supported by over 100 pieces of equipment, operating around the clock. Our top priorities are public safety, emergency access, and restoring mobility across the community as conditions allow.  Snow removal and clean-up operations will extend well beyond the end of the storm.

The Town of Brookline has declared a Snow Emergency and Parking Ban effective Sunday, January 25 at 12:00 PM (noon).

Parking is prohibited on all public ways, including on-street and metered parking, for the duration of the snow emergency parking ban. Vehicles parked in violation of the ban will be ticketed and towed to allow crews to safely plow and clear roadways.  The Town website will be updated when the emergency parking ban is lifted.

Trash & Recycling Collection

There will be no trash or recycling collection on Monday, January 26, 2026.
  • Monday’s route will be collected on Tuesday, January 27.
  • Collection for the remainder of the week will be delayed by one day.
  • Friday’s route will be collected on Saturday.
Residents are asked to wait until Tuesday morning to place trash at the curb, as overnight plowing and snow removal operations will be ongoing.

Sidewalk Clearing Requirements

In accordance with the Town’s Snow and Ice Removal Bylaw, property owners are required to clear and treat sidewalks and curb ramps abutting their property to maintain safe and accessible passage. If residents will be traveling or away, arrangements should be made in advance. When possible, we encourage neighbors to check in on and assist those who may have difficulty clearing sidewalks.

Plow Operations – Thank You for Your Patience

DPW crews will make multiple passes throughout and following the storm. As plows push snow to widen roadways, areas that have already been shoveled, such as driveways and sidewalks, may refill with snow. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding, as additional clearing may be necessary during and after the storm.

Storm Information & Updates

Updates during the storm, including the anticipated end of the parking ban and the storm end time (which determines when sidewalk enforcement begins), will be posted at:
www.brooklinema.gov/snow
Thank you for helping share this information with residents and for your continued support as our crews work through what is expected to be a challenging and extended storm response.

Stay safe!
