SHIMOGA: K. Padmarajan, a private medical practitioner of Gonur in Salem district of Tamil Nadu, finds his name in the Limca Book of Records of 2003 as the “most unsuccessful” candidate in the elections.
Now, he wants to improve his own record by seeing his name being entered in the Guinness Book of Records too under the same title.
Mr. Padmarajan, who has lost in 89 elections so far, has filed his nomination papers to contest against the former Chief Minister, B.S. Yeddyurappa, in the Shikaripur Assembly constituency not to win but only to lose so that he could improve upon a rather dubious record.
Shikaripur constituency has attracted national attention with two former Chief Ministers (Mr. Yeddyurappa and S. Bangarappa) being pitted against each other in a clash of the political titans there. Along with them, Mr. Padmarajan has thrown his hat in the ring to improve his record of unsuccessful contests which range from the local housing cooperative society’s to the President’s post.
He has the distinction of having contested against the former Prime Ministers too. He filed his nomination papers to contest against the late P.V. Narasimha Rao from the Nandyal constituency in Andhra Pradesh in 1991 and Atal Behari Vajpayee from the Lucknow constituency in 2004.
Mr. Padmarajan, who is a homoeopath offering free medicines to the poor, has developed a passion of contesting in elections “not to win but only to lose”.
He has tested his fortunes against the former Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi in the Assembly elections in that State.
He had also filed his nomination papers for the elections to the posts of the President and the Vice-President in 1997, 2002 and 2007. Though his nomination papers were rejected on technical ground, he had the satisfaction of being an “unsuccessful” candidate.
It is his insatiable passion to contest against bigwigs that has prompted him to file his nomination papers in Shikaripur to contest against the two former Chief Ministers.
Mr. Padmarajan was the first to file his nomination papers in Shikaripur on April 22 when the filing of nomination papers began. He has so far spent Rs. 5 lakh on his unsuccessful contests.
