A dozen years ago, I welcomed Berdan and Anawalt's (1992) new edition of the Codex Mendoza as "the definitive version" and "a user-friendly edition [which] while applying rigorous standards of scholarship ... can actually be read, understood and used by anybody with the desire to know more about the vanished world of Tenochtitlan and the Aztec empire, recorded by the last generation to know it before it fell" (Hammond 1993:169, 172).
