In this post I will show you how to install Windows ADK offline. I will also cover how to Install Windows ADK using command line. The Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit contains the tools to customize Windows images for large-scale deployment. In addition to that you can test the quality and performance of your system, its added components, and the applications running on it.

Starting with Windows 10 version 1809, Windows Preinstallation Environment (PE) is released separately from the Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). So you must first download and install Windows ADK. Furthermore to add Windows PE to your ADK installation, you must download the Windows PE Add-on.

To install the Windows ADK offline (i.e. on a PC that does not have Internet access) you must first download the installer files on a PC that has internet access. The main goal here is to get those installers. When I say Installers, they are nothing but small .cab and other files that contribute the Windows ADK installation.

The first step is to download the Windows ADK using adksetup.exe. On the PC that has internet access, download the latest version of Windows ADK. If you need the latest version of Windows ADK, click here. While I am writing this post, the latest ADK version available is Windows ADK for Windows 10 version 1903.

To install Windows ADK offline, copy the entire folder to the computer. Run the adksetup.exe and now you see the same two options. This time you will select the first option as you have the offline installer with you.

To install the Windows ADK on a PC that does not have Internet access, first download the installer files on a PC that has internet access. Next, copy the installer files to a location that is accessible to the offline computer. Then run ADKSetup.exe using either the GUI or the command line.

The success of this step requires that you run ADKSetup.exe on a computer with an Internet connection and without a copy of Windows ADK installed. If you have Windows ADK installed and do not wish to uninstall it, consider following the instructions in the "Using the command line" section below instead.

Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK)

I was unable to download the ADK through a proxy server using the "adksetup /quiet /layout " command so have done up a Update List (Error - Check your Internet connection - great work Microsoft! - Wouldn't a company that needs the ADK, would also be using a proxy server these days?) .

Hope there will be a full iso release to download offline in the future, however, in the meantime you can make use of this.

Keep all the downloaded files in a subfolder named Installers under adksetup.exe

Enjoy.

Edit: 8.1 Update now includes Patches\8.100.26866 subfolders, however WUD can't make multiple subfolders so I have called it Patches_8.100.26866 instead. You will need to make the required subfolders before running adksetup otherwise it will prompt for the location of the files.

Digital Evidence Investigator is built for front-line field investigators and lab examiners who need to do digital forensic investigations on Mac, Linux, or Windows. Combined with Mobile Device Investigator, Digital Evidence Investigator PRO gives you all the best computer forensic capabilities along with iOS and Android mobile forensics in a single affordable forensic tool.

In this short video ADF's Digital Forensic Specialist, Rich Frawley, demonstrates the installation process for DEI and DEI PRO, on an offline computer that does not have Internet access. You can refer to our Technical Specifications for minimum requirements and supported Operating Systems.

During the installation, a prompt appears to install the Microsoft Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (WADK) 10 which is required for preparing a Collection Key and conducting boot scans. To do this, the computer must be connected to the internet. Since many forensic computers are offline and do not have an internet connection we have the following instructions for Offline Installation.

On a computer connected to the Internet go to wadk.adfsolutions.com which will download the correct version of adksetup.exe. Execute adksetup.exe which will continue the installation process. When prompted to specify a location - Choose Download for installation on a separate computer. Approximately 3.9 GB of space will be required. Save the downloaded files on a removable device

Selecting the option to install common Android and iOS USB drivers during the installation of Mobile Device Investigator will start the ADF Smartphone Driver Pack installation process. A progress bar will be displayed showing the progress of the installation. The user may be requested to confirm the installation of some drivers. A prompt will appear when installation is complete, clicking the Close button will end the installation process.

When the ADK setup tool has downloaded all sources, you will find a new folder called Installers and a file called UserExperienceManifest. According to my findings, when the UserExperienceManifest file exists, the ADKSetup.exe assumes that the sources are downloaded and available in the Installers folder. To see the difference in behavior launch ADKSETUP.EXE with and without the file being present.

Now that we have the installation sources stored locally we can install the ADK on any client or server offline. ADKSETUP.EXE provides several installation options that are explained in detail here (go to section ADKSetup.exe Command-Line Syntax) or just launch ADKSEUP.EXE /?

Note: I heard during Microsoft Ignite, that Microsoft is still tracking an offline servicing bug for Windows 7 deployments with Windows ADK v1607, but haven't run into that myself. Anyway, if you would have a problem with the v1607 boot images, you can simply add an older boot image version, like v1507, side-by-side, and use for your Windows 7 task sequences.

First, the setup of Windows 10 ADK v1607 is like any the previous ADK setups, forget about inplace upgrade from Windows ADK 10 v1507 or v1511, you have to uninstall earlier Windows ADK 10 versions first.

Note: You get different options when installing on Server vs. Client operating system. For example UE-V and App-V is not listed when installing on Windows Server 2012 R2, only on a client OS. And for both App-V and UE-V to be available you have to run the ADK 10 v1607 setup on Windows 10 v1607. When installing on older Windows 10 versions, only UE-V was listed.

First, the Application Compatibility Manager, which has been used for migration application and hardware readiness, has been deprecated and removed in this release, leaving only the Compatibility Administrator (x86/x64), and Standard User Analyzer tools in the Windows ADK 10.

Windows ICD is changed quite a bit, added provisioning for school devices, and two provisioning modes (simple / advanced provisioning). The School certification / exam mode looks extra interesting. Also there is the new Windows 10 Team Edition settings, which are settings for the Microsoft Hub.

Note: What has not changed though is the terrible, terrible performance when using Windows ICD in a virtual machine, no matter the host hardware. The Window ICD will go into "non-responsive" for almost every change you do in settings.

Windows System Image Manager (WSIM) looks about the same as in Windows 10 ADK v1511, but there are some changes for the Unattend.xml file for Windows 10 v1607. You have the complete listing on MSDN: Changed answer file settings for Windows 10 for desktop editions, build 1607

Copy the files on SCCM server and run again ADK, this time in offline mode. Select Deployent tools and USMT.
Step four
Install WinPE add-on, run setup adkwinpesetup.exe offline or online, depends of your SCCM env. In my case I have downloaded the files on my windows 10 machine with free internet access than copied the files on sccm server and run from there offline.

Step five
Update Boot Images on DP's
Very important, after you finish to install Windows ADK you need to updates boot images on Distribution Points.
To update the boot image go to Software Library > Overview > Operating Systems > Boot Images
Right click Boot Image and click Update Distribution Points
Check the box Reload this boot image with the current Windows PE version from the Windows ADK. Click Next.

Once you click on the above links to download the ADK version, WinPE add-on, the setup files adksetup.exe, adkwinpesetup.exe automatically downloaded to the download directory on your computer.

Started Installing selected features. Once Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) for Windows 11 installation are completed, it may take time to complete the installation. Click Close.

To validate the Windows 11 ADK Installation, navigate to Control Panel > Program and Features in the target device. Here you can see the Windows ADK Windows Preinstallation Environment Add-ons successfully installed.

The Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit or Windows ADK replaces the former Windows Automated Installation Kit or Windows AIK. The Windows ADK has all of the same tools for creating Windows PE ISOs, The System Information Manager and the USMT. However it also includes the ACT or Application Compatibility Toolkit, the WPT or Windows Performance Toolkit and various other assessment tools.

The Windows ADK is not a single download and they do not provide a downloadable offline installation. The ADKsetup.exe is the online installation where you can choose which components to either download or download and install. You can use the adksetup program via command line to download all of the components to your Technician Computer. However I recommend using the GUI, since errors will just terminate the download.
