Subject: This
scam happened to me on Sunday - take care
Hi Roger
You may want to pass this on to the BEAR mailing list. If you do so, please delete all reference to my Email address,
This happened to me on Sunday afternoon.
I was driving back from Cresta on Sunday at about 4pm. I was on Beyers Naude, heading West, about 500m from the intersection with Monkor / Wilson. I noticed a Taxi parked on the left hand side of the road, it was a green sedan, possibly a Nissan. The driver appeared to be a black male. On the road next to the taxi was a young white couple. They looked “clean” “respectable”… all those good things. The young white chap was wildly trying to flag down passing motorists, he looked genuinely distressed.
I actually passed them, and then was struck by my conscience. So I did a U-turn and went back to them.
Yes, of course later found out that this was a scam. But at the time I felt I was doing my bit for folks in need.
I slightly opened my passenger window, and this young chap told me a sort of credible story. Their car had broken down and been towed away. ONLY after the tow truck left, they realised that the young girl’s handbag was in the car.. with wallet and cell phone. The taxi driver was willing to take them to Edenvale, to her mother’s house, where (of course bring on the real crowd grabber) their baby was! BUT the taxi driver wanted R150 up-front. Of course they had no money, and said anything would help, and they promised they would repay. So I gave them R100. They took down my name and phone number, AND gave me their names and landline number and cell phone number. They then went back to the “Taxi” ( was he in cohoots with all this ? ) … I waited. They got into the taxi, and started to move off.
(The girl’s name according to what she wrote down was Chloe Comte. The chap had fair hair. They were both really well spoken)
On Monday morning, I had not heard from them, and I was starting to feel uneasy about the whole incident. I called both telephone numbers they gave me. They were both false.
So I am R100 poorer, and wiser…. And REALLY CYNICAL
Maybe I am really gullible, but I think this warning could go out to our community.
Take care and be safe.
Regards
Jill
