In this video, I spear and prepare a whole kala in the easiest, most traditional way possible: over an open flame. Kala are great grilled whole and even the guts are edible or good for turning into a sauce, although I prefer to leave them for the birds. After gutting the kala and removing the sharp blades from its tail, I lay it down on a wood-fired grill that's giving off low to medium flames and heat. The fish will take 12 to 15 minutes on each side to cook.
Meanwhile, I prepare a simple sauce to pour over the delectable meat. This sauce is usually some combination of butter, garlic, and citrus, reminiscent of the French influences used to cook this fish in Tahiti where it is quite popular. Once the fish is cooked, use a chopstick to gently break the charred skin along the spine and peel the skin back from tail to gill, revealing the perfectly cooked meat. Pour the sauce on the fish directly over the grill and eat straight off the bones with chopsticks or fingers.
Introducing the Kala Cigar Box KA-CB-VICT-C concert ukulele with a stunning Victorian Era Art design! This beautiful instrument is crafted with a concert-size body, made of top-quality meranti wood for a rich, warm tone and good projection.
The open gear tuners with black buttons and laser engraved Kala brand logo add a touch of class to this instrument. The interior volume of the sound box of the cigar box is closer to a tenor so it is big on volume, but regardless of size, this ukulele is sure to make a statement with its stunning design.

Hey Thanks Bruce, I just checked out that uke, looks really cool! I like Lanikai, they were the first instruments I started my business with. The two companies are not exactly apples and oranges though.
Hey Andrew! Just happened upon this site while reading up on the Kala brand. I just received the Kala-FMTG I purchased through your online store. A month ago I purchased a Pono ATD which I am delighted with. The fit and finish are superb, the tonal quality is beautiful. Needless to say, I am very pleased with my Pono! Now on to the Kala. Just receiving it only two days ago, it is the new baby in the nest, but I must say, when I opened the box and unwrapped the flame maple/spruce top tenor Kala, I was extremely surprised at the fit and finish of this uke. It is beautifully designed and put together. The wood is gorgeous! Fit and finish are superb! I guess the reason for my surprise was the difference in cost of the two ukes. Though my Kala cost nearly 200.00 less, I find it exceptional! My Pono is strung low-g, where my Kala is high-g. It has extreme projection, and with the factory strings it is very bright. At some point I am going to experiment with various strings to hone in on the sound that pleases me most. Do you have any suggestions as to strings that would mellow her out a bit? The set-up on both ukulele is well done. The packing was satisfactory as well. I am satisfied with your service and will be back again. I have been bitten by the uke bug for sure!
The 1957 Tarzan movie Tarzan and the Lost Safari conflates Kala with Kerchak in a mention by the ape man of his adoption as a baby by a she-ape. The account echoes Burroughs's version of Tarzan's youth, but names Kerchak rather than Kala as his ape foster mother. While neither actually appears in the film (nor any other ape character, aside from the ubiquitous Cheeta), the direct reference to the original Burroughs story is unusual for a movie of this period.
In the 2013 computer-animated film Tarzan, Kala is a gorilla mated to Kerchak, the silverback leading their gorilla troop. After Kerchak is challenged and treacherously killed by the rogue Tublat, Kala adopts the young Tarzan to replace her deceased baby with Kerchak; Tarzan grows up to eventually challenge and exile Tublat. Late in the movie Kala is shot by mercenaries, seemingly dying, though she is subsequently shown to have recovered.
The property is the site of 51 ancient monumental structures and 250 dwellings and displays remarkable types of architectural ensembles such as Djuma Mosque, Oq Mosque, madrasahs of Alla-Kulli-Khan, Muhammad Aminkhon, Muhammad Rakhimkhon, Mausoleums of Pahlavon Mahmoud, Sayid Allavuddin, Shergozikhon as well as caravanserais and markets. The attributes are outstanding examples of Islamic architecture of Central Asia. Djuma Mosque, a mosque with a covered courtyard designed for the rugged climate of Central Asia, is unique in its proportions and the structure of its inner dimensions (55m x 46m), faintly lit by two octagonal lanterns and adorned with 212 columns. The madrasahs, which make up the social areas, have majestic proportions with a simple decoration, and they form another type of Islamic architecture specific to Central Asia.
The place of the architectural heritage of Itchan Kala in the history of Central Asian architecture is determined not only by the abundance of surviving architectural monuments, but also by the unique contribution of Khorezmian master builders to Central Asian architecture and preservation of its classical traditions. The domestic architecture of Khiva, with its enclosed houses with their courtyard, reception room with portico or avian supported by delicately sculptured wooden posts, and private apartments, is also an important attribute of the property that can be studied in its 18th- and 20th-century morphological variants.
However, the outstanding qualities of Itchan Kala derive not so much from the individual monuments but also from the incomparable urban composition of the city, and from the harmony with which the major constructions of the 19thand 20th centuries were integrated into a traditional structure.
Criterion (v) : The domestic architecture of Khiva, with traditional architectural style, represents an important example of human settlements in Central Asia by virtue of its design and construction.
The boundaries of the property are appropriately drawn encompassing the high fortification walls of the city. All the elements that express the outstanding universal value of Itchan Kala are included within the property.
The total area of the Itchan Kala with its square shaped defensive walls and surroundings has remained intact. The madrasahs, mosques, narrow traditional streets, settlements, caravanserai, marketplaces and minarets are being maintained.
Management and controls are carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, through the Principal Board on Monuments Protection, at national level and by the Khorezm Regional Inspection on Preservation and Restoration of Objects of Cultural Heritage at regional level. The use, maintenance and monitoring of the monuments within the boundary of the property are carried out by Itchan Kala Reserve Directorate.
Kala is calm, gentle, kind, and loving. She loves her son Tarzan so unconditionally, although she said that she knew Tarzan wouldn't replace her firstborn son who was killed by Sabor. Although she is usually a gentle person, Kala is capable of aggression when necessary and is also very brave, like when she was fighting against the deadly leopard Sabor in order to protect the baby, Tarzan. Kala often disagreed with her mate Kerchak but despite this, they did love each other, and Kala was sad when Kerchak died.

One of the options for this ukulele is to trade out the Herco HE-360 included humidifier for the more expensive Oasis Ukulele Humidifier (OH-18) at a discount. This is required if you live in a low humidity area (parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, etc.) or also areas with winter seasons, especially if you heat the air in your house. For more info refer to the Ukulele Care link at the bottom of this page. If you think you need to humidify the instrument, then you also need a hard case for a humidifier to properly work, and you need to maintain the humidifier by refilling it as needed.
