UC San Francisco researchers have completed the first Internet-based clinical trial for children with autism, establishing it as a viable and cost effective method of conducting high-quality and rapid clinical trials in this population.
In their study, published in the June 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the researchers looked at whether an Internet-based trial was a feasible way to evaluate whether omega-3 fatty acids helped reduce hyperactivity in children with autism. The authors found that not only was it a valuable platform for conducting the randomized clinical trial, but that it was both cost and time effective, as well.
Because the IAN requires that parents complete a short questionnaire and verify that their child has been professionally diagnosed in order to participate in the online network, the researchers were able to confirm the participants met the diagnostic criteria for autism without a clinic visit.
While the researchers found that the omega-3 fatty acids did not lead to a statistically significant reduction in hyperactivity, they concluded the online trial was a promising technique for evaluating treatments for autism.
Other authors of the study are senior author Paul Law, MD, Tara Zandi, MSW, Kiely Law, MD, Luther Kalb, MHS and Jay Nestle, BS, all of the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Robert Hendren, PhD, Jae-Eun Choi, BA, and Felicia Widjaja, MPH of UCSF.

We provide legitimate, quality training that adheres to the AHA's guidelines and is approved by numerous third party accrediting organizations.
Want to make sure your employer will accept your ProFirstAid blended or online certification? No problem! We will contact them by phone or email. We even have a letter of introduction that will explain our program.

Chesapeake Pediatrics is a community-minded, family-oriented practice that has served the children of Hampton Roads since 1987. We are especially proud that many of our staff have been here through much of our history.
We encourage a partner-like relationship between the provider, patient, parents and the community to ensure that your child receives comprehensive preventive health care and that parents understand the development stages that are part of growing up. We also encourage parents and patients to meet with all of our providers. A friendly face is always comforting to a sick child. Established patients can now schedule a well-visit appointment with our office online.
New patients are welcome at both office locations. We offer same-day sick appointments on a first-call first-served basis with a limited number of visits available, along with easy access to CHKD specialists, many of whom offer appointments at the CHKD Health Center at Oakbrooke.
It's a good idea to start looking for a doctor about 3 months before your baby is due. Ask for recommendations from relatives, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and doctors you know. Then, check your insurance company's website to see if the doctors are in your plan.
