This discussion group and mailing list is for Brock students and faculty who are interested in the annual ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). You can post via the web interface or via email. Only members can see the discussions, but anyone can request to join.

Since 1977, this contest has aimed to develop teamwork, problem solving, and programming prowess in the next generation of IT professionals. To encourage worldwide involvement, ACM now gives free, one-year memberships to all ICPC participants.

The contest consists of three stages:

local contests (competing against others at your own university)
regional contests (competing against teams from other universities in your region)
world finals (competing against the best teams worldwide)

The contest pits teams of three university students against eight or more problems with a five-hour deadline. Huddled around a single computer, competitors race against the clock in a battle of logic, strategy and mental endurance. Teammates collaborate to rank the difficulty of the problems, deduce the requirements, design test cases, and write programs that solve the problems under the intense scrutiny of expert judges. Teams fight for the top of the leaderboard by solving as many problems in the least amount of time.

Examples of problem topics are search, graph, dynamic programming, number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and string processing.
