Hi All,
Introducing Co-Head High School Coach Tyler Myers
- He has coached sailing to a high level for 13 years
- Yacht Club of Sea Isle City 420 Race Coach (3 years)
- 3 x Hobie 16 National Champion
- Sailed for Christopher Newport University
- Head Sailing Instructor at Baycats Kayaks and Catamarans (7 years)
- Ocean City Yacht Club Sailing Coach
Together with the Robby Brown and the new Jr Director who will be announced shortly (she sailed to a high level in college, placed highly in multiple snipe world championships and has coaching high school sailing for several years), this is a fantastic coaching team who I'm sure you'll enjoy for the spring season.
Schedule
Above is the updated link to the 2017 season. As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, the berths meeting went very well for SSA, and SSA teams are attending as many regattas as possible, including all the important regattas for both Varsity and Jr Varsity. We will use the same system as last fall with placing your name on the schedule if you're unable to attend a practice or regatta. All sailors should download the Google Sheets app and then can be done off your phone. Failure to do so makes organizing practice / regattas harder for coaches.
Registration
If you have not registered already, please do so. Sailors not registered by the first day of tryouts will not be allowed on the water. Payment for the season can be made at a later date, but it is imperative that sailors register online before tryouts begin.
Please note the cost of high school sailing this spring will be $600 per sailor when paying by check, and $620 per sailor when paying with credit card online. The extra $20 is a processing fee from the credit card company, and does not go SSA or the SSA Junior Program. These are the same prices as AYC.
New Sailors
It is imperative each season that new sailors join the team, this ensures the longevity and success of each of the teams.
Please tell your friends about high school sailing, tell them how much fun it is and encourage them to email
sai...@severnsailing.org if they have questions.
8th graders are allowed to sail if they are going to attend + sail at either South River, Broadneck, Key or Spalding in 9th grade.
Friday March 3
- Compulsory Rig Session at 3:30pm - All sailors are required to attend.
- A reminder to all new and returning sailors, there will be a pre-season informational meeting on Friday March 3 at 6:30pm. At that time we will be able to go over expectations for the tryout period as well as the remainder of the season. This will be a time to meet the coaching staff (the new Jr Director, Robby Brown and Tyler Myers) and answer any questions. Finalized schedules for the spring season will also be made available. A sailor code of conduct and social media policy form will also be handed out to be signed.
Drysuits
Appropriate gear is a necessity this time of year! All sailors will be required to wear either a drysuit + PFD on the water for the first couple of weeks while it is cold. Additionally, if any sailors would be willing to loan extra drysuits to new sailors during the tryout period, please let me know. Drysuits are useless if they leak - get these leaks fixed ASAP
Tryout Dates
Tryout dates are the following:
Monday March 6: Broadneck and South River
Tuesday March 7: Key and Spalding
Wednesday March 8: Broadneck and South River
Thursday March 9: Key and Spalding
Friday March 10 will be a mixed practice day for both JV and Varsity teams from all four schools.
Show up at SSA asap after school (3:30pm at the latest), ready and excited.
Guest Speaker Talks
As the same as the fall, there will be some special talks which all sailors are encouraged to attend. There will hopefully be the following talks on the following areas:
- Psychology
- Nutrition
- Weather
If anyone knows individuals who are in these fields and would be willing to talk at SSA during the spring, please get in touch as myself and the new Jr Director will be organizing these talks shortly.
Questions
As usual, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. I (James) can be reached via email
sai...@severnsailing.org. The new director starting at SSA soon and will be taking over the emails from the 27th of Feb onwards.
Best,
Jessica and James
