We have developed a set of competencies for technology trainers as a
part of the Colorado State Library BTOP project. These competencies
focus on the skills needed to teach technology, and are based on
existing trainer competencies. They integrate technology as the
primary subject of instruction, as well as the aspect of individual
instruction that is so common (and needed) in libraries and public
computer centers.

The competencies can be used to assess what training needs to be given
to staff. In fact, we have developed a series of "Train the Technology
Trainer" workshops that correlate to these competencies. The
competencies are divided into categories/sections that can be related
to specific job descriptions. For example, we know that not all staff
will be involved in instructional design, so those competencies (and
training) may not be needed by all staff.

This is the first version of these competencies, they may need
revision along the way. Do you have any suggestions for improvement?
Is anyone else using competencies for technology trainers? We would
love to hear your feedback.

Hi Crystal,

Thanks so much for sharing your technology training competencies! I'm certain this resource will help projects, and I've posted it on our Broadband Stories from the Field section of TechSoup.org so that more folks can benefit from it.

Your post reminds me to encourage more resource sharing.

If other folks on the list have resources in the making that could benefit from feedback, or have useful tools to promote, please share them on the list. We’re all interested in NOT reinventing the wheel, so the more we can share our collective knowledge, the better.

For everyone on the list: Colorado's BTOP website is really worth checking out. They continue to churn out impressive resources, useful to libraries and nonprofits alike: http://coloradovirtuallibrary.org/btop/

Keep up the great work!
