Hi folks - it's been a while, but we have good reason to celebrate!

As Kevin mentioned on the other Broadband Bridge lists (see below), the FCC has just voted to enforce Net Neutrality, ensuring among other things that cities are able to develop their own municipal broadband networks, that internet providers are regulated as public utilities, etc.

I know a number of people on this list were active in advocating for such policy change at the federal level and in other communities around the country. Thanks to you for your great efforts, and congratulations on a tremendous victory.

Over the past few years, I've personally been absorbed by another project, but I still believe there's a tremendous opportunity here in DC. This is as good a time as any to promote it.

Over the last few months, I've participated in some serious conversations among people in the District government about how to go about realizing the potential of DC-CAN. Since i've pretty much just been in an advisory role to people who hadn't participated in the Broadband Bridge, these conversations happened off of this list. My hope is that the fruits of those conversations will be shared back here soon. In the meantime, suffice it to say that I think that much of what we dreamed up years ago very well may be possible in the years ahead.

On that note, i'm around next week and would be happy to huddle up and dish about this stuff. I'm thinking happy hour on monday or tuesday, but flexible. If you'd be interested in catching up and talking shop, drop me a line :)

Maybe DC now CAN? (pun intended.)

Who on the list was trying to put together a local internet co-op?  You'll have to look at the details, but it looks like it just got a lot easier for you:

For years, cities around the country have been trying to build their own, local competitors to Verizon, Charter and other major Internet providers. Such government-run Internet service would be faster and cheaper than private alternatives, they argued. But in roughly 20 states, those efforts have been stymied by state laws.
