On PC, Final Fantasy XIV will natively recognize an Xbox controller (Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series XS). It should also be able to natively recognize the PS4 controller, though without full touchpad functionality.

Going straight into a proper max level DPS rotation is not recommended if you have no previous controller MMORPG experience, as you could end up building bad muscle memory while you are still figuring out your style. Because of this, healers or tanks, which do not have large rotations, are especially good for practice.

Having a chronic pain disorder has affected my ability to play games in ways that I never thought possible. Pressing buttons rapidly cramps my hands. Using my mechanical keyboard can give me repetitive strain injury, and can leave me using wrist splints for weeks to recover. Gaming is a huge part of my life, being a gaming journalist and a Twitch streamer. However, it can be a detriment to my health and I have to be careful in the games I play, the choices I make and the equipment that I use so that I have the safest and most comfortable experience possible.

This wasn't a problem for me a couple of years ago, but I've recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I've felt the full effects when trying to play MMORPGs. From being able to spam buttons with no problem when playing tanks in World of Warcraft to suddenly feeling exhausted doing the smallest rotations, I've had to carefully consider my classes and what is easiest and most accessible for me.

Let's talk about World of Warcraft first. This was my introduction to MMOs, and was also my introduction when it came to finding my comfort levels - and knowing when to stop. One thing I truly admire about WoW that a lot of other MMOs don't allow for is the ability to play on a touchpad. I actually adapted to this style of play from the get-go through poverty and not having access to a desk, instead playing WoW on a laptop in my bed. It's not the best setup, admittedly, but it worked for me. It's how I fell in love with the game, and I haven't stopped since.

(Would I perhaps be better at the game if I could play with a mouse as well? Probably. I have tried my utmost hardest to incorporate a mouse into my playstyle, but I find it confusing and stressful, and it just doesn't give me the level of comfort that using a touchpad does. This is also because I am left-handed, and have played using the directional keys for movement in every game since I was a child. It also accommodated my pain levels, as all of the keys I needed to press were close together.)

This year I finally bit the bullet and tried a new MMO, however. Final Fantasy 14. All of my friends were playing it, and quite honestly I was feeling the fear of missing out. This game has been an absolute game changer for accessibility and my needs as a player with a chronic pain disorder. When I first started, I was daunted by the mouse and keyboard options, seeing how many players struggled to manage three different hotbars. Then, I saw people mention playing it on a controller. The thought of playing an MMO on a controller seemed wild to me, but I was intrigued nonetheless.

Admittedly, it was a little fiddly to get used to, but once I figured it all out, it was a dream. It made playing the game so easy. Suddenly, there was no struggle to move, no cramping in my hands... I could have cried with joy! For once, I wasn't held back by my disabilities playing a game, and I could fully enjoy it with my friends without worrying. It's been a joyful experience, and I am so glad that I discovered FF14.

FF14 continues to be a game that I enjoy alongside friends. It has allowed me to connect with people that I haven't been able to hang out with in a long time and has given me great memories and hours of fun. It has become one of my favourite games and equally has become a great thing for me to stream on Twitch.

Not only has FF14 been a really wholesome experience for me and my friends, it has been a joyful one with the community. Whenever I have explained my situation and why I use a controller, of have asked other players to slow down due to my disabilities or potentially not understanding something, everyone has always been so kind and thoughtful. FF14 has one of the nicest in-game communities that I have ever come across. It makes a huge difference.

Overall, I owe a lot to the MMOs that I have played. They have allowed me to connect with my friends and enjoy gaming together. However, I really owe it to FF14 for bringing me closer to the experience I deserve to have within an MMO as a disabled person.

Setting up a hotbar that works for you is essential to being able to play at your best. There is no singularbest way to set up your own hotbar, but there are plenty of ways to make it easier to find something that worksfor yourself. Just because something works for someone else doesn't always mean it will work well for you, somake sure to try things out and be okay with changing things if you feel like it isnt working for you. The followinghotbar setups are what I use personally, and are only to be used as an example. If something feels wrong or doesn'twork for you for whatever the reason, do not hesitate to change it to something that does feel good for you.

As a preface, Ninja is considered one of, if not the hardest job to play on controller with because of the sheeramount of buttons you constantly press compared to other classes.I use the common principle of putting the things you use most often on the buttons at the forefront. The first picture below is using just LT and RT following the idea of RT being your gcds and gcd based buffs, withLT being everything revolving around Ninjutsu. This keeps my head in the mindset of RT being your normal gcd and LT being Ninjutsu.

The second bar is the expanded hold controls with both LT and RT, which I use for my more rare use case skills. I have put afew of our less used gcds on these bars as well, with keeping it the same whether you use LT then RT or vice versa. The otherhalf of the bars though is different, with RT then LT being your personal defensive skills, and LT then RT being your raiddefensive and movement. And then I have Limit Break on an entirely different bar because it is so rarely used, andis not often something you have to react to press on Ninja.

Keyboard and Mouse UI and keybindings are a lot harder to help with, due to the nature of there beinga lot of different kinds of keyboards and mice out there. The example below uses a standard QWERTY keyboard, and uses WASD for movement as well as mouse at times.Using WASD or your mouse for movement is entirely down to preference. I tend to use both depending on thesituation, but use whatever is most comfortable for you and your way of playing. Do not blindly follow whatI choose to do.

Modifier keys such as L ALT, L SHIFT, and sometimes L CTRL are commonly used and are highly recommended in orderto keep your keybindings close and easy to reach, but which ones you use are entirely down to preference. I preferL ALT and L SHIFT because of how I am used to using a keyboard and the size of hand I have, but if you feel betterusing some other combination, go ahead.

I also use an MMO mouse in order to alleviate keybindings, but this is by no means required; I didn't use it until a few years ago.In my example, I use a combination of a 6-thumb-buttons MMO mouse, the number bar above thekeyboard, L SHIFT and L ALT as modifiers, and some miscellaneous keyboard buttons are used as needed. This setup is comfortable for me, but took me many years to find, so while it can be good for you, don't immediatelyuse this. It is meant as an example of how someone has set up their bars, but once again, find what works for you.

My top bar is just R, F, T, G, Y, and H. I use these for some of my rare skills, and some of my buffs. My second bar is my L SHIFT modifier up through the 7 on the number bar on the keyboard. These are my Ninki usageskills as well as Mug since it increases my Ninki, and then Throwing Dagger becauseit was the easiest place to put it while it being mostly out of the way. Ten Chi Jin is a remnant therebecause back in the old days it used to cost Ninki, so that was just what was comfortable for me.

My final bar is just my number bar through 6, and is reserved for my normal gcds I use all the time. On the right side of my UI,I have my defensives, potions, and True North. These are tied to my x button, with modifiers, and my tilde button withmodifiers, as well as random buttons from my mouse. Limit Break is on an entirely different bar along with some markersfor when I have to mark people while raiding using the F-keys for marking and then a mouse button for Limit Break.

This guide was written by Sheenda Naweh,a long-term theorycrafter for Ninja. He has gotten multiple different rank 1 speed kills overthe years, and consistently gets week 1 clear times for new releases of fights. You can watchhim play all melees on his Twitch.

Final Fantasy 14 is an incredibly controller-friendly MMORPG, with controller layouts having their own intuitive user interface in-game. This interface has been carefully designed and improved upon over the years to ensure that players using a controller can clear all the same content that players on keyboard and mouse can - up to and including the nightmarishly hard Ultimate encounters.

DualSense Edge: $199 at Walmart
Technically you're getting a dollar off here, but at the time of writing the DualSense Edge is holding firm to its listing price as it typically does. We'll keep you updated over the upcoming Prime Day sales should this gamepad see any notable discounts, however. In the UK, though, Currys currently has the controller listed at 10 off.

The DualSense Edge is a pricey controller at $199.99 / 209.99 but is worth the price of admission if your budget can stretch to it, in our eyes. If the Edge is beyond your price range, though, consider sticking with the regular DualSense for that lovely touchpad.
