Thwaites Mill used this crane to unload the chalk from barges. It was
fired up and working for the open day back in 2011. It is rated as 3
tons. You might have thought they would have had a local Smith of
Rodley, so it was quite a way in those days to bring a crane all that way.

Sorry guys, not Butterley but BUTTERS BROTHERS !

The firm of Butters' Brothers & Co Ltd was founded in 1867 by Michael
and Archibald Butters at premises in Howard Street, Glasgow. In 1898
they moved to 195 McLelland Street and in the 1930s they opened branch
works in London . In 1963 the company became a member of the Thomas W
Ward engineering group of Sheffield, England. The firm manufactured all
types of cranes but especially the Scots pole derrick crane.

It was involved with the following subsidiaries;
Steel Construction Co Ltd, Wishaw, North Lanarkshire;
The Forth & Clyde Foundry, Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire;
The Abbot Engineering Co Ltd.

In 1980 Butters' Brothers & Co Ltd was closed and went into voluntary
liquidation.
