Help!
I had an enquiry from near Gullane regarding Scotland's traditional love of foursomes matchplay.
Apart from the famous Duke of York foursomes mid-1600s at Leith I couldn't think of much other evidence for this firmat in 1700s and early 1800s

I know this is nothing to do with your enquiry but I received this
message /question today on the subject of foursomes. Can anyone help
Mr Rust:-

Hello There,
I have been trying to find out about Sunningdale Rules and see that
you have used this for one of your matches. How does the game work
please and where do the 'Rules' originate?
I have liaised with the secretary of Sunningdale Golf Club and they
have no knowledge.
Any help would be appreciated,

Sincerely,
Alistair Rust

I have played Sunningdale Foursomes on many occasions at our Centenary
Hickory matches. I have never known of its origin at all, that was
the reason for putting it on our forum. We will wait have to wait and
see: Our version of it is:

'You decide which one of the two sides receive shots, and take / give
shots until one either side goes two holes down. At that stage, that
side then receive a shot at the next and all subsequent holes until
the match goes back to one down. I would say at this stage the side
receiving the shot cannot claim to be entitled to another shot on any
particular hole - they only get one shot per hole. Shots are then
received / given in the normal manner. It is irrelevant which of the
side goes two down, the other side gets a shot even if they were not
entitled.'

I would say, played this way, that the match always seems tight and it
is unusual for one team to run away with the match. So much more
friendly.
