Hello all, I just joined the group.
I just helped my 16 year old son into this B 40 from an estate.
She had recently been repowered, including a new dripless shaft seal and most through hull valves.  Also new foresail winches.
When we got her in Tarpon Springs Fl, she had a broken fwd lower, (we patched it with some all thread and cable clamps.  got the engine running, with charged up batts, and made it out by noon.  We just ran a jib and engine to get the 60 miles or so to Tera Ceia bay in south Tampa Bay.
It was rough in the Gulf so the dirt in the fuel tank got all stirred up;  Luck I was watching the filter, which filled with dirt and water every hour, I drained it hourly.  We got in at midnight 30.

We have substantial delamination of the Mahogany plywood (which did not have marine grade glue)  We have removed the quarter birth deck, fwd face and engine room stringer.  The will soon be replaced with marine grade plywood, which we will stain.

We soon realized we were leaking from the hose on the rudder seal, The clamps on the bottom had broken and the whole seal was turning with the rudder, wearing out the inside of the bottom of the hose ( which had rotted and cracked)  I taped it with gorilla tape and reclamped it.  We keep a good eye, pumping often.

On the  issue of the broken lower;  We replaced it for $400, (man prices have gone up)
We also pulled the chainplate ( which is very easy 15 min Job)  It was cracked on each side where the bend is, this is typical where it gets no oxygen at the point of sealing where it goes through the deck.  We are in process of replacing them all, as several were cracked.

Other issues:  The trim was removed and varnished but not reinstalled.  WE have no idea how long the holes were open; but long enough to do extensive rot damage in the woodwork below, That little trim on the cabin side above the ports, is the worst culprit.  We may one day paint a stripe, but that trim will never go back.

We will haul out at the end of march, rudder check replace rudder box, and what ever else we find then bottom paint.

This vessel will be my son's after he gets out of High School with a diploma,  Got him off his games, he is too busy with the boat to fall into bad crowd, works real hard,  to pay his car insurance.  He will pay this boat off someday.
I have the same boat ( a Heritage 38, which I added several feet of sugar scoop to, and changed out all brass, engine,  Full Rig, copper, floors, and about everything over near 30 years,  spent 5 in carib, San Blass and Panama until it was time to give up home schooling aboard.  Enjoyed Cuba Bahamas and Mexico too.  She has not been plugged in to power or kept in a marina for 12 years, Love Solar and Wind.  living in houses is OK as long as it's only a few minute dingy ride to the boat.

Thats it for now,
Win Yerkes
