Greetings All,

Has anybody replaced their waterlift muffler? 

I've still have the original metal Hydro Hush on Bacchus and it's probably getting long in the tooth and am wondering what it's replacement might be.

My engine is the Westerbeke 4 108 (W - 40).

I took my old one to a welder and had him make one out of stainless pipe he had hanging around. It cost about $200, but it is such thick material, I double it'll corrode out. I've had it now for about 5 years. It fit exactly back down on the same mounting area.

HI Maurice:  If you want to go another route, I think Vetus, out of Holland(?) makes a heavy polyethylene plastic "water lift" muffler that I had great experience with in my prior boat: no problems whatsoever in more than fifteen years of service.  Not heavy, easy to install, can be installed using PVC for elbows, etc.

I am interested in the placement of the original muffler. Mine is right under the engine and uses a long exhaust hose to loop around  the front right side of the Westerbeke.  I have thought there could be more space efficient way to route the exhaust. Any pictures?
BTW  the muffler is a plastic one, as I remember ,a Dyno"hush

Where are you at now?
 
I had it made by Joe at Consolidated Manufacturing in Pasadena, MD (410-255-6591). It's a one-man outfit in a barn. I've had other things done by him, too.
 
My Hydro-Hush was just below and forward the front of the engine. The hose does lead over to the starboard side. Mine is attached to the starboard bulkhead, so it's not too much of a problem. I don't have a photo of it, but the attached photo shows the lead of the hose on the starboard side.

My understanding is the the best mufflers are the fiberglass ones.  Metal ones, even stainless, rust out.  The fiberglass muffler in my boat is over 30 years old and still looks like new.

Mark,

My muffler is lower port side forward. The exhaust manifold is on
port side. The hose does not come down in front of the engine, it
goes down behind and comes forward just above the engine mounts. But
then the exhaust comes out the back, it makes sense. From the looks of
Scott's pic, it appears his exhaust manifold is on the Port side, as
well? I see the hose coming out of the block at the thermostat and
going to what looks like the water jacketed manifold. Curious as to
where that bloody exhaust hose gets routed over top the engine and
why? Can you take another shot showing a 3/4 view of top and front,
Scott?

Next time I go to the boat, I'll try to remember to take a camera.
It's very interesting looking at Scott's pic, since our layouts seem
to be significantly different. But apparently even within boat lines,
that was the norm. When talking to the parts guy at Westerbeke some
years ago, I had to be very specific on part #s, because he indicated
nearly every engine layout and configuration was different.

Thanks for mentioning the Glass muffler, I may give building a
fiberglass muffler a shot. I am due to have my engine pulled and
worked on. She needs front and rear main seals, a new head gasket and
I have issues with the exhaust manifold having one stud stripped out.
While she is out, I may as well replace that muffler. Do you know how
thick the glass is on your muffler? Do you know if it is shaped the
same as the SS ones?

Note the exhaust hose emerging from the side of the engine and snaking
down to the muffler centered below the engine. My mistake, I guess it
couldn't be to port, since it is actually down in the keel cavity.
The tank above the engine is an over flow and fill coolant tank. The
hose comes out of the engine block and goes directly to the water
heater aft and starboard, then a return hose comes to the tank and
finally comes out of the tank and back into the exhaust manifold from
which it will reach the block, completing the circuit.
