Caulk

Happy Spring Everyone,

Any recommendations on exterior caulk?

I used 3M 4000 on my toe rail/deck seam and it began to break up and turn to dust after a year. Evidently, there have been issues with this product. Not happy.

I’ve also used Sika but not sure that was much better.

This year I switched over to using butyl rubber. I rebedded the main cabin hatch (not companionway hatch) and handrails with it this winter, so not much time with it. However, it was easier to deal with (i.e., less messy) and will be easier to remove in the future. I've seen both white and gray butyl.

Not familiar with that product. Is there a trademark name? Can you get it at Home Depot?

I used Sika on my Bristol 39 toerail seam. I did not like it either. I prefer the job I did several years ago with LifeCaulk.

I used butyl rubber to bed portholes, cleats and other hardware instead of 4000 or 5200. I highly endorse it for those uses. I never used it on the toerail. I thought it would collect dirt.

I don't know about getting it at Home Depot. I bought it from Amazon (here). It was $16 for 33' x 1" wide. Think of it like Silly Putty. McMaster-Carr also has it in, I believe, different thicknesses.

 

As to dirt collection being an issue, I don’t have enough experience. The good news is that if the area around the fastening screw has a recess (concave), then the tape can be used just at the screws and not under the entire toe rail. For example, I used it under my dodger snap screws into fiberglass and it doesn’t show.

 

Finally, aren’t our boats hull to deck joints lined with butyl tape? I don’t know about everyone else, but the stuff used there is still pliable on Willow after only 42 years.

I’ve had very good luck sealing wise with butyl. I bought it as vacuum bag sealant but basically the same stuff. The one complaint is as time goes by it does flow a bit and pickup dirt. Going back over  the fitting with a chisel or scraper to remove the excess takes care of the issue.
