and the next issue...

I had a new exhaust elbow installed in the Spring of '23. This Spring I had a mechanic in Mystic who found the elbow @ the engine block end holding on by 2 threads. He tightened it up but said I should take it out over the winter and really tighten it up. (why he didn't do it then is beyond me).

Today I was looking at the engine before going out and the asbestos wrap around the pipe was 1/3 unraveled. I removed it all to rewrap it and was able to rotate each piece of the "riser pipe" by hand. A friend has remarked my setup looks needlessly complicated. As this is my 1st diesel I have nothing to compare it to.

I removed the 2 nipples and couplers. It appears I have to remove both elbows (access is painful so haven't done that yet) and put it all together at home (with Hercules Real Tuff) properly then reinstall.  Love any advice.
Thanks,
Rob

Rob, you have a different engine than the Westerbeke 40 in Willow. However, I would look for some pipes and fittings (e.g., www.mcmaster.com) to eliminate some of the joints. However, you do need the riser out of the engine and the water injection at the second elbow.

From your photo of the water injection elbow (third photo), it looks to me as if the elbow is installed backwards. The water injection should never be able to go down into the exhaust manifold. If you turn around the elbow, then the water would go to the water lift muffler and not the engine. That might also explain why the water hose wraps itself around the aft-side of the elbow?

Yep, it’s very tight back there!

Morning Scott,

This is the assembly I have and this pic is from the manufacturer so I believe the orientation is correct?

Since both elbows are currently SS I think adding a one piece SS riser and keep it all SS makes sense.

This is from Yanmar:

The hose from the top elbow down to water lock is at least 5-6 inches long so trimming it should make the assembly fit with the 9" riser.

Weird, but I defer to the photo and Yanmar!

Curious:

Are we married to metal risers?
Since they and the elbows can fail
(i've read differing accounts of the life span on those pieces, some say two years, five years. Some people say they've had theirs for 25 years) why not use exhaust hose as the riser piece? Much easier to cut to fit, cheap to replace even if one did it annually.

No else has chimed in, so I’ll gently wade into this…

I have metal, I’ve always had metal for 45 years of boat ownership. The only issues I’ve had is with the water injection corroding or getting blocked. I have not had any pipes or elbows corrode away or need replacing. Others will probably have different experiences. On Willow, I’ve put on over 4,000 hours on the engine (5,200 hours total since she was built).
