Morning Everyone,

I’m shopping around for insurance and my broker is offering a policy with Progressive

Any experiences with Progressive? It seems people either like it or hate it.

Or, any recommendations?

Thanks,
Maurice

Maurice,

We have BoatUS, which has gotten restrictive since they changed from CNA to Geico. I don't have any claim experience with them, except that they won't take boats over 40-years-old anymore (two of my kids found that out). For me, they keep knocking the boat's value down, until they required an insurance survey last year. Then, they were forced to up the value.

A guy at my marina has Progressive and had a major claim in 2023. He was happy with their service. However, that's a single data point. My kids both went with Progressive, but luckily neither has had to file a claim.

Scott

Thanks Scott, that’s helpful.

I had BoatUS/Geico for a long time. But Geico went crazy with their prices so we went from having everything with Geico to nothing with them.

BTW, I’d take the build quality of our 40+ Year old Bristols over most of what’s being churned out today.

BTW II…having roller furling installed on my inner forestay and a SailPack for my new main this Spring. Trying to squeeze out a few more years with this aging body.

Hi, Maurice!

I would like to echo everyone's BoatUS/Geico experience about the decreasing value and survey requirement due on our next renewal.  We have had positive claim experiences with them, however; they handled a major incident very fairly.

Maurice,

I'm probably different than most, being on a relatively small interior lake.  I have been with State Farm for 40+ years, and they initially insured our 39 without much fuss, but for a low replacement value and poor liability rates.  After the partial refit, I went to Progressive with all the receipts, and we settled on a mutually agreeable value and much higher liability rates.

I have no experience with Progressive claims, and I used to be very happy with State Farm's service.  The local State Farm agents used to have a say and influence in helping you through any claim; however, it's now all handled at the corporate level.

Hey Maurice,

I own a 1967 B39. I was initially with Hagerty/Markel but soon realized I was paying way too much based on information I gleaned from this group and elsewhere.

I went with Progressive. Last year I lost all my electronics as well as my FM stereo. I had been away for weeks so what had happened was a mystery. I do not use shore power. The yard electrician said everything pointed to a lightening strike.

Progressive sent out an adjuster who looked at the boat. He determined that there was no sign of any lightening damage. I had conversations with the agent at the 800 # stating the conclusion of the yard technician. They ultimately denied the claim.

I sent my Ray Marine A95 & A70 (older but completely functional for my needs) to their factory. They concluded that the units showed all the signs of a lightening strike.

I was super busy at the time and didn't pursue the claim any farther with Progressive.

I did learn that lightening can travel horizontally after an initial strike (ie from a nearby boat).
(Curious what others know/have heard).

Since there was no apparent ingress/egress of a strike I can't fault Progressive per say but the BOAT's still hurts!

Cheers
Rob

Rob,

Years ago, our previous boat was hit by lightning. We weren’t aboard. One of the telltale clues was that the prop turned black. According to the adjuster, the sulfur in the water caused the blackness. We also had a lot of other damage, but since you didn’t mention electrical switches blown apart, melted mast glass light bulbs, and dust where the VHF antenna once stood, let alone a thru-hull standing out proud from the hull (old boat, thick hull, no water ingress), I tried to zero in for you on something that might have been overlooked.

Regards,

Scott

Thanks Scott. None of that occurred although to be honest neither i nor the adjuster went up the mast.
