Good morning, all:
I have been looking into buying a wind vane for off shore use for my 1978 35.5. I have looked into; Windpilot, Monitor, Sailomat, Aries, Cape Horn, Windy, and Hebridean kit. I am seriously close to buying the Windy (windyselfsteering.com) from eastern EU for approx 1400 EU (plus shipping). Admittedly the Windy mounts are not as stout as many of the other makes, but do you need that if I'm not planning a Cape Horn route? My thinking being that because my 35.5 tracks with very little helm, I dont need an Aries or the like.. Curious anyone's experience, thoughts, ideas. thanks dave

We installed a cape horn. Very happy with its simplicity

Appreciate the information. And good to hear you are happy with your cape horn, but that unit is about $4000, so would love one, but unwilling to part with that many boat bucks....
thanks

We have the Cape Horn as well. In 6 years I have replaced one piece of shock cord. It is set up to work on wind or to steer under power.  We use it on any trip longer than a few hours. I also chose it because it disappears.

It was expensive, but has proven its value.

I also considered the Monitor. It looked like too much plumbing on the stern, and had many parts that were designed to wear out.

I did not look at many others.
