Good afternoon:
I am chasing deck leaks that became evident on a run down to Bermuda last june. I plan to remove and re-mount all deck hardware (eg lifelines, handrails, centerboard crank, chainplates, dorade boxes).
Starting with the hand rails. Has anyone removed these from the deck? Appears mounted with screws. Matching screws holding interior handrails.
thnks

Dave,

I did remove the handrails on my Bristol 39.  It was pretty simple as you seem to know.  I removed the wood plugs on the inside handrails and unscrewed them. I used marine butyl rope caulk to rebed them, so they can be removed again if needed.  I replaced the wood plugs inside as well. It was easy. They have remained dry for the 12 years since I did it. No 5200 was used on my boat, so the removal was not difficult.

Jim, good evening:
Appreciate your information and experience from re-bedding your handrails on your Bristol.
I have removed the bungs (6) from the deck mounted rail and was able to remove 1 screw so far (see attached). I was pleasantly surprised to find it was a bolt and not a wood screw. I am in the process of unscrewing the next to deck rail bolts, but have found they turn but are not advancing as the 1st one did. So there is a nut embedded in the deck?? Or the bolt I removed went all the way thru and also held the interior rail in place?? (I dont think it is long enof for this but will see).

I have moved down below and have begun to remove the bungs from the interior handrail. Still working on these clearing the debris so I can see what I am working with.  I think I can make out a slot head for a screw. More to follow.

Oh, boy I hope noone used 5200 when mounting either int or ext handrail!  I would probably break it in half if it was so mounted.

Thanks and will keep you posted on my progress.  First handrails then stanchions or jib track, and dorade boxes..
Curious did you have an eyebrow mounted on your boat? And if yes, did you remove and re-bed??  Don't know if I could stomach doing that!

There were no nuts in the deck.  Not that tricky.

The eyebrow was in bad shape so it was removed and a new one refashioned when the boat was repainted.  I would not removed it and expect to reinstall it.

Jim, good morning:
I was able to remove both handrails, internal and deck mounted, from my port side.  Machine bolts (3 1/8") with washers and nuts against the interior liner held the deck mounted in place, while same type of bolts (havent seen the nuts) held the interior hand rail.

In one of my pictures from down below you can see a nut next to a hole (interior bolt hole) for each of the 6 points of attachment for both rails.  I need to clean up the deck around each point of attachment and see if I can determine whether these were leaking. Appears to be dirty but not soft from water intrusion. Rail both int/ext came up with bolt removal. Minimal to no sealant between  exterior rail and deck.
More to follow.

Did you have plugs and a different bolt on the external handrails? Mine were attached from below only. No plugs on the exterior rail.

Jim;
I sure did...see attached picture....this shows the headliner area of one of the 6 hand rail mounts covered by the teak rail. The nut (left side of pic) is threaded on a bolt that holds the deck-mounted rail on. This bolt travels thru the handrail, thru the deck and thru the headliner. The hole next to the nut is for the bolt that goes (in the opposite direction) thru the interior handrail and onto a nut that is embedded in the deck, but not thru the deck.  I still need to locate these nuts.

Oh, and all bolts both interior and exterior were plugged.

Hope this helps to make the design clearer.
thnks
