Yop yop,

The guys from lesseverything are planning a Rails for designers workshop. (http://designonrails.com/)

I tough that is a great idea, as it's always good to have designers ready to work in HAML/SASS.

Is anyone interested in planning something like that as part of our September Brug?

We could a free evening HAML/SASS introduction and training in the PM Studio?

I'm definitively in, let me know if one or 2 other persons would be interested, and I'll ask Olivier for the space.

I'd love to pitch in, I've just been teaching my designer friend how
to get around rails / haml /sass etc. so It's already on my mind.

Does anyone use [compass](http://github.com/chriseppstein/compass) at all?

It seems that's where SASS really comes into it's own allowing frameworks like [blueprint](http://www.blueprintcss.org/) to be used while still having semantic class names.

Would be interesting to hear how people use some of the more advanced functionality like the extensions and mixins to keep CSS more maintainable.

I did use it on my last project,

It's definitively a big win for an easy ie/ff/chrome compliant website and keeping a clean HTML/CSS

I haven't dived to much on all the mixins available as I only needed CSS2 stuff, but I've used all their blueprint and ie-bluprint mixins.

I just found the installation/configuration a little tricky.

I hated the install / getting started (an hour long tutorial video??
sheesh) so I just stole a bunch of mixins out from the source code :)
Worked great for me, though I will be giving it another shot soon.

I use HAML/SASS for most of my projects. The only time it gets
impossible is when you're converting someone else's HTML into HAML.
You can convert using html2haml, but changes later on are a nightmare.

SASS, though, is great: I use it all the time. I've yet to try the
SCSS format, but it looks good - I used to use LESS and quite liked
it. I've only used Compass for watching files and automatically
converting them when they're saved - but recently I had a few problems
so just switched to using CMD-R in Textmate.

I'd say LESS is better for designers than SASS as it's actual CSS rather than it's own markup so would require less time to learn.

LESS is nice, the only problem I have when using is it looks like CSS to much. Found it a bit confusing when nesting elements. Really prefer the SASS way.

Anyway, we have some great developers in the group, but when it comes to design it's always good to have designers that can work with our tools, so was thinking doing this workshop in an evening / afternoon, dedicated to designer who wants to work with Rails.

We could ask them before to have Rails installed, and forget about code, only concentrate on front end side with them.

We could create a simple application and let everyone download it to work with, that will cut out a lot of time in creating code to work with and allow everyone to concentrate on the presentation and view code rather than models/controllers

Yea, good idea.

That looks like a "Blog application" good candidate.

I'm getting a strange urge to make it CSS garden style so designers could commit there SASS in a subfolder and then switch between them on the front end.

So what are the key features that are required for the BRUG site?

Off the top of my head:
- Events calendar
- Members page with things like links to github?
- Blog !?
- Message archive?

Hum, yea good idea as well.

We should keep in mind that if it's just an evening/afternoon, they wont be able to create fancy stuff, but we can let the sandbox open for people who wants to play with it.

Yea, the CSS Garden stuff is really cool! +1

Having a CSS Garden stuff, with 1 demo page is ok, but I don't like the idea of asking them to design the website.

Maybe we should create a new thread for the Brug website.

We are meeting at the Jiva office, you'll need to call up to get the door opened, scroll through to jiva technology.

http://jivatechnology.com

There are a few talks planned, if you have a talk too that would be great.

Not sure if I'll find the time to finish my talk on Xapian, but we'll definitively talk about this Rails 4 designers workshop ;)

We're not planning to do it tomorrow then, just run a full workshop in
future?

I prefer LESS.js [1] over SASS (although I like and use HAML). LESS.js runs client side and can watch .less files and automatically apply changes without reloading.
