Hi BRAINiacs,

Just a reminder that I'll be leading a BRAIN walk of The Gap Rainforest next Sunday 5 May starting at 9 am and finishing with morning tea at 11 am. All of the walk will be on easy-to-walk tracks. I’ll be checking the tracks this week and carrying out maintenance if required.

We’ll be starting and finishing at the Lions’ Club Picnic Shelter Walton Bridge Reserve 941 Waterworks Road The Gap. The main carpark for Walton Bridge Reserve is right next to the picnic shelter and adjacent to The Gap Police Station. There are also toilets next to the carpark.

We’ll start with a brief introduction to Walton Bridge Reserve, Glenella Street Park and The Gap Rainforest Project. This project has established that bushland along Enoggera Creek is endangered sub-tropical rainforest (RE 12.3.16). More details about the project are on the SOWN web site:

The walk will go through a short loop of remnant bushland between Fish and Enoggera Creek to check on specimens of the rare and endangered Native Guava Rhodomyrtus psidioides struggling because of Myrtle Rust. Also looking at a 200-year-old Northern Grey Ironbark Eucalyptus siderophloia and a community of Brown Myrtle Backhousia leptopetala.

Then we’ll head down Lochinvar Lane to walk the 500-metre track through Glenella Street Park. Your challenge will be to find more specimens of Native Guava Rhodomyrtus psidioides which have been recorded along the track but not sighted lately. We’ll be stopping at the giant Rough-leaved Elm Aphananthe philippinensis which has now been established to be at least 250 years old.

Once we get to end of the Glenella track, we'll retrace our footsteps and return to the picnic shelter for morning tea. The whole walk including the return is estimated to be 1.5 kilometres.

There’ll be copies of The Gap Rainforest Statement of Significance for you to keep if you wish. See below a photo of me, Marina and  that’s Klaus behind Marina, recording plants on a botanical walk we did up near the Enoggera Reservoir in 2022.

Hope so see you on Sunday 5 May.

Cheers, Anne

Hi, Anne,
I'd have loved to come, but have something on that morning.
Best wishes, Prue
