Brisbane Eckhart Tolle Silent Group Meeting

This is most people’s reality: as soon as something is perceived, it is named, interpreted, compared with something else, liked, disliked, or called good or bad by the phantom self, the ego. They are imprisoned in thought forms, in object consciousness.

From Oneness With All Life

(Extracts this year will be taken from Oneness With All Life. As Eckhart describes in the introduction to the book, “ For this companion volume to A New Earth, I selected passages from the original book that felt particularly suitable for inspirational or meditative reading’.)

Choose an object close to you – a pen, a chair, a cup, a plant – and explore it visually, that is to say, look at it with great interest, almost curiosity. Avoid any objects with strong personal associations that remind you of the past, such as where you bought it, who gave it to you, and so on.

Also avoid anything that has writing on it such as a book or a bottle. It would stimulate thought.

Without straining, relaxed but alert, give your complete attention to the object, every detail of it. If thoughts arise, don’t get involved in them. It is not the thoughts that you are interested in, but the act of perception itself.

Can you take the thinking out of the perceiving?

Can you look without the voice in your head commenting, drawing conclusions, comparing, or trying to figure something out?

After a couple of minutes or so, let your gaze wander around the room or wherever you are, your alert attention lighting up each thing that it rests upon.

Then, listen to any sounds that may be present. Listen to them in the same way as you looked at the things around you. Some sound may be natural – wind, water, birds – while others are man-made. Some may be pleasant, others unpleasant. However, don’t differentiate between good and bad.  Allow each sound to be as it is without interpretation. Here too, relaxed but alert attention is the key.

Information for New Members

Meetings:
We meet each Thursday at St Mary’s Church, Merivale St, South Brisbane. Although the meetings are held in a Catholic Church, we are not affiliated with any religion. The church is open from 6:15 pm to allow silent meditation for those who would like that, or a cup of coffee for others that arrive early. We ask everyone to be present from 6:45 with the meeting starting at 7 pm. The meeting finishes at 9pm, with an open invitation to go from the church to a local coffee shop to continue the discussion.

How to get there:
The meeting is in the church itself, not at the adjacent Parish Hall. To get there, take the driveway at 20 Merivale Street and park in the car park. The car park is well flood lit. Knock if the church door is closed and we have started.
Note: Parking can be difficult as there are other meetings nearby, and the car park can be full. Make sure you allow plenty of time to find an alternative.

What we do:
We commence and end with silence and each week watch a part of one of Tolle’s videos. The 'meditations' are brief usually 5-10 minutes at beginning and end. Afterwards, we retire for a coffee at The Three Monkeys coffee shop on Mollison St, West End to continue any discussions.

Our library:
There is a large a/v library for lending. There is a one off fee of $5 to borrow from the library. (This covers the cost of replacement discs, cases, etc).

The cost:
There is no formal cost, but we request a gold coin donation each week per person. Any donations are appreciated and go to the church for electricity and costs.
