Think I am going to have a go at making rose petal wine from Rosa Rugosa/Canina petals.  It could be amazing or it could be hideous...  Anyone want to come collecting some time?  I'm away for a week so it will have to be after that.  Could talk people through the wine-making process as well, if anyone's interested.

I'd be up for that. i want to make elderflower wine so could probably pick those at the same time, and would def be interested to have a chat about the wine making process. i'm going to have about 0 free time over the next few weeks but will try to fit in with whatever day is planned!

Saw this article the other day. the step-by-step element seems pretty helpful. http://www.landshare.net/users/adam1111/blog/organic-garden-wines-from-grown-foraged-fruits/ <http://www.landshare.net/users/adam1111/blog/organic-garden-wines-from-grown-foraged-fruits/>

Well, I'm away for a week so any foraging will have to occur after that... But I'll be in touch.

Sat 4th at some time? I am going to assume rose petals will still be around then.

Early on the 4th (or even 5th) better for me - my sister's visiting and we're hoping to get a look at the Kemptown carnival - though I'm sure she'd be up for some winemaking too!

5th good for me too I reckon. I don't have any rose petals so I'd need to source some I suppose too! Or, happy to forage on the Sunday.

Both, I think. We'll only be able to do the first part of the process, so we'd be able to do both.

I'd love to join in, and the Sunday works really well for me. Whereabouts will we forage for Rose Petals and whereabouts will we do the wine making?

Best Wishes

I would suggest the sea front. I think there's rosa rugosa down there. Plus we could do a bit of seaweed identification. Anyone have any other ideas?

If people have bikes then I would suggest going east along the sea front until Peacehaven/Newhaven.  I ran down there the other day and there were quite a few roses out.  We could also mix it with seaweed/seashore identification.  Does this sound ok?

Beth - my sister is visiting this weekend so I might end up driving. I'll probably have some spaces in the car. So what do you suggest? A bit of foraging then back to set them up for some wine making? Or perhaps just a little tutorial en situ to save the hassle and time of transporting ourselves from Newhaven back to Brighton? What kind of kit might we need? A demijohn and one of those u-tubes?

What sort of time, too? 12ish?

We need six pints of petals (which I'm going to assume is approximately a carrier bag full) for one tub of wine so I would suggest we make it together and divide at the demijohn/bottling stage. I think we might struggle to get that amount of petals (we can't strip the flower as then bees won't be attracted to it and the plant won't be able to reproduce). Maybe we'll find some honeysuckle which is also strongly scented and we could make a mix or two smaller amounts of wine. All we'll be doing on the day is pouring boiling water over the petals to infuse them but we can go through the wine making process.

Hi James,
I'd love a lift if there is room in your car? I live in Hove but can come and meet you wherever.....?

Apparently there are lots of bass and lobsters out Peacehaven way at the moment so if anyone has a fishing rod or a lobster pot it might be worth bringing??!!

Best wishes
Jo

Hi James- do you per chance have any spaces left in your car- I
suspect I may not be fit enough to cycle all the way to peacehaven!

Thanks

Hi Beth,
I'm going to give today's foraging a miss due to the weather and go foraging for a roast instead!

Hope we can all get together again soon.

Best wishes

Is that a cancel for today with the naff weather and all? If it didn't go ahead may tentatively suggest next Saturday at 12 or 1? (Hanover day on Sunday). Be happy to drive some folks over.
