Not huge notice, but anyone up for a forage on Saturday afternoon? Maybe in Mouslecoomb Wild Park or up on the Downs?

I was thinking about 3 pm

Yes, I'm up for this. 3pm works well.

I can't make this Saturday, but would anyone be interested in a seaside forage in September? Does anyone have any knowledge of foraging molluscs??!

Very best wishes
Jo

I would be up for it if I don't end up going to a film screening at 4.  Keep me in the loop, Lianna!

Hope y'all don't mind if I mass reply, in case it's of interest to anyone else.  With mussels, it's recommended to only pick them in the colder months, from Oct to Apr, but perhaps Sept is ok too.  I'm not sure how intense algal blooms are here in South UK.

As far as picking them, you have to stick to the ones on rock faces, as far above the sandy floor as you can get.  Those things consume a lot of sand. So that said - low low tide!

I have to say, though, I've never successfully eaten collected mussels, but I'd be excited to try!

Maybe it would be a good idea to go on a trip to a nice clean beach for mussel collection?

Okay, given that I'm probably not going to check my email before tomorrow afternoon, here's a plan!

Meeting at 3 at the big radio antenna on Racecourse Hill, we'll walk over the Downs to Lewes, and get a bus or train back.

This is my phone number in case you need directions or anything: 07913 777 076 - though it will be off before 1 pm, and probably won't check emails again.

As for what we'll find, there are definitely cherry plums and blackberries; possibly early apples; and I'll bring the Food for Free guidebook for looking out for more obscure plants!

(I guess tomorrow I won't be able to meet before 3 and it'll take a while to get to a clean beach, but how about a seaside forage another weekend soon? Anyone got suggestions of clean beaches and how to get there?)

Happy evening

So we didn't get to Lewes (maybe that was a bit ambitious!) but did come back laden with apples, plums, damsons and berries. You should definitely get up the racecourse and around towards Woodingdean / Whitehawk - treeloads of apples and plums. I'm munching a delicious pink-tinged apple right now  ;-)
