So we've had our first app published with no problems other than a
meta-data issue. We did this largely as a learning process for the
whole submission process, whilst we're working on our second. more
featured tablet app.

Question for you all...

The apps are free, but require you to have a login to our website.
This is a commercial subscription that starts at a couple of hundred
pounds per-annum (and can be a lot more). We're obviously very keen to
keep Apple's hands off a cut of this.

We've been very careful to avoid advertising the subscriptions or any
talk of them in the app, and just say "You must have current Musical
School login" with no detail on what that it is.

Has anyone got any experience with where Apple draw the line with
subscriptions? For example, could I link to our main website which
does talk about subscription pricing, or should we avoid this
entirely?

For our first app, I just used a launchkit.io website:

Does the subscription to Music School website offer only digital services or are there real world services offered as well I.e. In person music tuition?

The base subscription is digital only. In-school training is an add-on.

Then I suggest No mention of the subscription.

Look at how audiobooks.com and audible have implement their apps on iOS for "best practice" of avoiding the apple payment fees.

In our case of charging £9.99 per month apple worked perfectly for our needs and the 39% was worth it. But we were app only.

Thanks Chris,

If we included Apple's cut plus VAT in our base price, we'd be
offering annual subscriptions at around the £300 mark - would be
interesting to see how many we sold via the App Store ;)

I’m close to releasing a recurring subscription app around the £300 per year mark using In App Subscriptions, but a thought occurred to me last night to break that down to monthly. So 300/12 = £25 per month which to the user seems a lot more palatable. Maybe worth considering for your app too?

We don't sell monthly subscriptions, just annual ones (the target
audience is schools) because the product works across the academic
year, but yeah otherwise it would seem more affordable.

I just had this from Stefen at Churchill Sq - worth contacting him if you are thinking of getting any kit.

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I hope you’ve been well. As the main contact from the iPhone Creators Group we speak to, I thought it’d be useful to let you know we are just in the process of going through any purchases needed before the end of the financial year for our customers, and it’d be great to hear from any of the community in the group.

We are able to look, in some scenarios, at some increased loyalty pricing on products. As you are likely aware, this is a rare thing for Apple, so something I’d encourage anyone that’s looking at purchasing over the next couple of months to consider at least a short conversation with me.

If possible, could you share this with the group, and let anyone that’s interested to get in touch before the 20th March, and we can discuss it all through.

Thank you,

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna wait until March 21st before I make any big purchases!

Mind you I notice he said to talk to him before March 20 if you're considering purchases in the next 1 to 2 months, which I am. :)

Yep - I just emailed to let him know I'm planning to buy a 13" MacBook Pro as soon as the Skylake model is available. I thought it was worth a punt :)

I got an iPad a year or so back.  No one there seemed to know anything about the group but they still gave me 10% discount anyway?!?!?
