Dear All,

We have had an offer from a graphic designer (the lovely David) to help with our labels.

What information do you think it important to have on the labels?
What sort of style would like the labels to have?

When talking to David, we were discussing how to reduce the amount of waste that we might produce using labels.
Does waste matter to you?  Do you prefer labels on the bottles or on the cap?  Or re-usable luggage tags?

If you could let me know by the end of the week, that would be great.

Best wishes
Hedvig

Hi Hedvig,

When I label my own bottles (in the amateurish way pictured) I never bother to wash off old labels, as I think this is a huge waste of hot water and time, more than any paper-use problem. I am a fan of the brown paper and sellotape method myself but printing sounds great too! Sometimes I have made lino prints for really nice bottles.

Date, location, ingredients. If the brew comes from a pick it would be nice to have a picture taken on the day, or something derived from it.

Are you going to follow the time honored real-ale tradition of really nasty names? Or is that a northern thing.

Paul

PS I am thinking of doing a pick this weekend if anyone is up for it.

Hello All,
Good news.
From a practical, cleaning point of view cap/cork top labels would get my vote.

all the best

Ed

Thank Paul, great to see your labels. I like the brown paper version.

So far the brews have just been BBC1, BBC2 and BBC3.  But we could start coming up with names.

Brown paper is always lovely. I think it's an ingrained cultural thing ;)

I'll work on the basis of small labels, and cap labels then! That way, people have the choice depending on their own preferences.

Been working on a logo idea, but want to expand it out a bit and try a few other things. Shall get back to you soon!

I think I would want labels on the side of the bottle - I don't think we'll get all the information on the cap. We can either go for sticking new labels over the top of the old ones or investigate labels that come off easily - the Kilner jars I just bought seem to have such a thing...

Hello all,

Attached are a two ideas for the labels and general "logo". I have a strong preference for idea 2 as it works better in a single colour and at small sizes. I imagine it'd look ace rubber stamped in black ink on brown craft paper, and work equally well professionally printed on fancy paper in a brochure.

I've looked at labels from two viewpoints - bottle and cap/cork labels, so that those with a preference for one over the other can choose what they want, but also to make sure that the general idea works for small and large!

What do we think? (Correct answer is "Idea 2", btw, ha!)

Hi David,

I think they both look awesome!  If you are more comfortable with Idea 2 then happy to go for that.

Thanks very much for your effort on this!

Maybe we could use a similar graphic style for the website?

I concur on the second one (altho both look ace!).

When's the next forage n brew by the way?  I'd like to possibly gather some heather (is heather protected, by the way, considering that heathlands are...?) to flavour my first attempt at making beer...

I would probably be up for organizing a forage brew this weekend - Sunday? Dp you have somewhere in mind Vera?

If people say yes I will involve the Nature Booze group as well (https://www.facebook.com/groups/166480203366363/ ).

Yikes, I'm working all day at Apple Day Sunday!  By my next few wkds are free.  I got two jars of barley malt from Holland & Barrett and am keen to use them!  I've not seen any hops or heather in the Brighton area, but I know that St. Leonards forest is a good place, and somewhat accessible by bus.

Hi David et al,

Sorry for the slow response.  But firstly, thank you David!

I definitely prefer no. 2. I really like how clean the logo is, and really like the bubbles on the label and the typeface.

I feel like the bottle cap label looks like a pool ball, in a bit of a weird way, and I am not entirely convinced by the blue.  But would love to hear about why you went with it.

But definitely getting thumbs up from me.

hxx

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and blue is just blue... nice thing about idea 2 is that we can change the colours pretty much ad hoc for whatever people like. I'll look at the bottle top label and see if anything else springs to mind to make it less pool ball-like, and show some other colour options at the same time.

good reply 'a cigar is just a cigar'.

I was wondering whether the colour would be changeable based on the brews, and I have to say that really appeals.

Looking forward to seeing what springs to mind.

Home brew has gone mainstream!

Hello Brew Folk,
I hope you are ll having a lovely weekend and I further hope Beth remains in possession of all appendages!
I realise everyone here except me is an artisan brewmeister using only the finest foraged ingredients but none the less I though you might be interested to know Wilkinsons AKA Wilko have a half price sale on all home brew stuff. Perhaps the ingredient kits won't tickle you fancy but they also have brewing sugar, malt, yeast, bungs, etc etc.
Just thought you might like to know.

In other news I am riding London to Brighton on the 16th for British Heart Foundation, love to meet up if anyone fancies it. Also, with apologies, anyone wishing to donate via my just giving page would be my hero for ever, or until next time.

All the best
Ed

PS I just moved home and have started a Wilko "Elderflower" kit brewing. It's not really Elderflower as it is a cheap white wine grape juice flavoured at the end with elderflower. I'll let you know. I may still brew a proper one from steeped dried elderflower next week, like i did last year but maybe less alcoholic.
What are you brewing?

Hi Ed,

Good to hear about your latest brews.

I haven't been brewing much, but would be up for collecting some elderflowers and making something with them.

I'm afraid I'm busy on 16th, but hope you have a great ride.

Best wishes
Hedvig
