Here's the latest on how you can help celebrate our youth
Dear Community Champions,

Envision, act, and educate. That's what we're asking for our 2024 One Night Without a Bed (ONWAB) campaign.

Imagine a world where every young person has the stability and support they need to thrive and achieve their dreams. ONWAB is our annual expression of hope and transformation, shining a light on the journey of youth who are moving toward brighter futures.

Contribute to making that dream a reality. Your time, assistance, advice, connections, and donations for ONWAB are the key to demonstrating our shared commitment to center young people's voices, help uplift them in their efforts, and highlight their resilience and strength.

Inform yourself and others. Understanding the barriers youth face is the best way to help them overcome those barriers. Education is one of the pillars of the work we do because it provides a foundation from which young people can achieve anything.

Read on to learn more about what we hope to achieve with ONWAB as well as the other recent accomplishments related to our program pillars.

One Night Without A Bed 2024: Campaign & Event Update
Partner With Them.
As we prepare for the November launch of this year's ONWAB campaign, we want to highlight that this effort is about the possibilities that arise from supporting Detroit youth with basic needs while nurturing their talents and aspirations. The funds raised go toward our rapid rehousing program, drop-in center, and programs that amplify education, employment, and leadership opportunities.

The campaign also features an overnight, youth-led celebration of connection and community on Friday, November 29 beginning at 7 pm at the Morenas Event Venue in Redford, MI.
Partner With Us.
We have seen firsthand how youth are able to overcome obstacles to achieve great things. They are scholars, entrepreneurs, leaders--they are our future. We all find joy when we work together to turn their hope into reality.

However you are able to show your solidarity, we welcome your partnership in this cause!

Workforce Development Pillar: Helping Young People Build Their Future
Part of laying a strong foundation for the future is turning talent and interests into employment or entrepreneurial opportunities. An example of this is our Beyond The Ashes social enterprise, which offers life-changing opportunities for transition-age youth to learn and grow. That's something Youth Action Board member Diamond White has experienced first-hand.

In a recent Click on Detroit Live in the D segment Diamond talks about her past struggle with housing insecurity and how the support and programs offered by DPC have not only helped her, but inspired her to pay it forward by helping those experiencing what she's gone through.
Watch the Video
How has Beyond the Ashes helped young people like Diamond? By providing meaningful employment at a living wage, leadership and business skill development, and avenues for creative expression. Through periodic pop-up shops, youth also gain valuable hands-on professional experience while helping raise awareness and resources to support DPC's mission.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
Education Pillar: SOAR Kick-off at Covenant House Academy
We're bringing SOAR into schools! Our SOAR program provides a safe and educational after-school experience for students in grades 8-12th who are McKinney Vento eligible.

We are excited about our inaugural placement in Covenant House Academy and look forward to this and future opportunities to connect with even more youth and support them on their way to reaching their full potential.
Youth Powerbuilding in Action: YAB Meeting

Our Youth Action Board (YAB) members serve as educators, allies, and advocates in support of our mission, and in a recent meeting took time to learn about resources available to help peers who are experiencing housing insecurity.

Kaitie Giza and Meredith Baughman from Homeless Action Network of Detroit spoke about HUD's Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP), which supports communities in developing and implementing a coordinated approach to preventing and ending youth homelessness. YHDP offers funding and other resources to support young people as they build stability to aid their future success.

Community Coming Together: Back 2 School Blast
Last month's Back to School Blast and Peace Walk was designed in the spirit of community, and the community delivered!

DPC is a member of Transformers Alliance, which organized this free event featuring backpack and supply giveaways, shared meals, personal services, and fun for all ages.
We were happy to be on hand to share what we do, connect attendees to vital housing and health resources, and celebrate the sense of support and unity within our community.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT
Outreach & Engagement Pillar: Health is Wealth Summit
Much of what we do is raise awareness through outreach and engagement with members of our community. At the Black Legacy Advancement Coalition Health Is Wealth Detroit 2024 event, our Summer Leadership Academy (SLA) apprentices had a great time supporting those efforts at our resource table.

With live music, health screenings, and lots of goodwill all around, our young leaders connected directly with community members to share information about our mission and demonstrate the hope and promise of youth.

Our Mission: Detroit Phoenix Center (DPC) is a high-impact, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that responds to the needs of youth, ages 12-24, who are experiencing housing crisis or instability and seeking a place to belong, authentic relationships, and critical resources. DPC supports young people through direct services, including a daily drop-in center for young adults (showers, washer/dryer, food pantry, computer lab, day beds, hygiene products, life skills classes, etc.), an afterschool enrichment program for teens, youth action board, emergency crisis support, and a scholarship fund. DPC also works diligently for systemic change and contributes to the growing movement to end poverty and youth homelessness.
