I am able to retrieve me.xml, search.xml, and update notes.xml, but
the exact same un/pw for checkins.xml returns 401.

How are you handling authentication?

I am using HTTP Basic authentication.

Are you sending basic authentication on every request, or just once and then rely on a session cookie?

I am sending http basic auth every request, but my code also
automatically handles cookies, so it is probably doing both.

Interesting...any chance that you could send us the HTTP Request headers?

What framework / language are you using? I had similar problem
using .Net Compact Framework.

After looking at the headers I noticed it was not sending the http
basic auth with the checkins.xml (developer error). It was working
before so it must have been using the cookie. I added the http basic
auth and it started working again. Thanks for the help.

I checked in from Disneyland, on Monday Feb 23, and now I notice that
I've been stuck there ever since, meaning that my API checkins have
not been working since then, I haven't changed my app at all during
that time. I've been using OAUTH.

The rest of my app, which leaves voice notes at checked in Brightkite
locations, is still working fine. But it's supposed to leave a short
text note containing a link to the voice note, stored elsewhere, and
those text notes have also not been working.

I'll try to get more information when I look at it more closely, later
on today.
