I know the personal development industry well. When I worked as a professional speaker, I often found myself coaching individuals, motivating large crowds, and speaking about the limitless potential resting within each human.

Anthony Robbins The Path to Permanent Weight Loss

This is where whimsical ideas about working four hours a week, manifestation, a seven-minute cure to stuttering, rock hard abs in minutes, and endless orgasms come in. We want these things to be possible, so we surrender to their glaring illusion.

Just as she put the gun to her head, she had an epiphany: she never learned to love herself. In fact, she realized that for most of her life, she hated herself. In that moment, she felt clarity and relief for the first time.

I believe you when you say that NLP worked well in your classroom for both management and learning. That seems like a reasonable claim, one along the lines of operant conditioning. This is very different than the approach to NLP that is closer to magic incantations used to rewrite your brain. And David, I so appreciate having you as a reader. Thank you!

It is interesting that you focus on NLP, where NLP is just a part of the skills used by Tony Robbins. He does use the principles of NAC (Neuro associative conditioning) to help people rewire their brain.

My 2 cents and worth just that, Jason was attempting to be humorous while acknowledging Orleatha was bringing a new angle to the conversation. Perhaps it was hamfisted or poorly expressed but it did seem sincere to me. Your response Ms Davies speaks more about you then about the author. Entirely too sensitive, jumping to conclusions, judgmental and and overbearing sense of moral righteousness.

I agree. For someone who believes in personal development, this article felt like click bait to position off the status of Tony and let people see you as the star. It feel non-authentic and divisive, which is a media and societal way of doing things vs a true student of personal development and someone who embodies love and respect. We are all welcomed to our opinion and this is simply mines.

As you said, the education, licensing, professional credentials, referrals should speak for themselves. Now I see why this booming industry, filled with amateurs is dangerously tempting. So I really like the way you put it: speaking coaches are mediocre speakers who failed to make it as a pros; know your worth boys and girls!

Thank you! You have managed to put into words why I have always felt uncomfortable with Tony Robbins and life coaching in general. My dearest friend is an avid fan of his and all forms of life coaching, including NLP, and has been a follower and practiser for a number of years. Do I need to be concerned for her, is intervention needed and is there anything I should/can do to help her? Thank you.

Regarding personal development. i will tell you my story . i started into personal development from 2003. my first books were robert schullers books. since then i started reading personal development downloaded hundreds of books. tony robins included. seven habits of highly effective ppl. courses etc Till 2013 there was no major change.Nada. yes you are right ppl 10 years and no significant change. i started getting results mainly in 2016. Now what the fuck happened? 10 years no change
but after i started things in 2014 i am getting phenomenal results results i didnt get in the last 10 years

The shift started when i did the following
1 instead of reading best sellers of modern times. i started reading personal development material which arent modern best sellers
2 i started reading the books of the ppl who were the teachers of many personal development gurus. for example. Lets bring tony robbins. instead of him i started reading his mentors book jim rohn. lets talk about jack canfield. instead of his book i read W clemt stones books

3 All these previous actions actually happened when i actually took Bob proctor seriously
why in my experience in PD bob proctor so far tells one thing that no one does. YOu have to study success he always refers this book and that book.
4 when i changed my philosophy of success to this. success is nothing but a few simple disciplines everyday. this i first learned in a book called slight edge and then learned its the guiding philosophy of Jim Rohn
5 When i started focusing on processes
Let me give you one example i have been consistently practicing releasing . from the sedona method others also use the release technique which is based on the same teaching from 2014
initially the changes were minor a small ease but i liked it and did it on a daily basis. small changes but i felt lighter but i focused on the process and i am getting results in 2016
i joined a group called success insider in 2016. full of PD enthusiasts but when i ask the majority of them in 2017 how their lives have changed. they say it hasnt they go to this coach and that coach but no permanent change. but i on the other hand just practicing releasing. have better results.
6 now what is the catch i am getting results tangible results? by the way i live in an underdeveloped nation where Personal development is considered waste of time. and we dont have coaches. most of the books and courses i have are basically free. and i most of us earn less than 500 dollars. yet i am getting more results than ppl who have access to coaches. something doesnt add up right?

7. so this is my take on why i am getting results even though many ppl have the same philosophy of consistency and focus on processes. I believe it is the nature of the process i focused on.You see jason pointed something very interesting most ppl in PD are in need of therapy in other words healing. I am getting results because the Sedona method exactly is that type of a process. A healing process. let me be more detailed . read any self development book including andy shaws books(which are way better than most) and they talk about Letting Go. but i told you i am in a group called success insider and when i asked ppl there the question How do you let go? most dont even have a clue and they give vague answers. So when i focused on a process which focuses solely on Letting Go and is healing in nature.for two years. i may have initially had small gains but now i have bigger results to show.
Also even though i am an engineer and was in the academia for 3 years. i did not buy the scientific endorsement. it doesnt matter if its scientific or woo woo. Does it give results? if it does i dont care. Because contrary to popular thinking. results are more important to engineers than scientific consensus. The best ones dont give a damn if its endorsed by the scientific community. first results then the consensus will follow.
Nlp gives results is it scientific dont give a fuck but the result can be replicated thats all i need
does chanting the lotus sutra give you results great stick to it.
the same with sedona method. in the rational wikii its labelled as woo woo. but is it giving results?
yes thats all that matters

so the bottom line focusing on a healing process(any One) and staying committed to it for a long time 2 years gives you bigger results than on a self development technique which gives you instant results or gives you an improvement in only a small sector of your life. like finance. social skills etc
and reading books written by the ppl who were the teachers of many modern Personal development gurus give you more clarity on what to fucus and not focus

Robbins is not the first snake oil salesman and she wont be the last. People need to stop looking outside for the magic wand that will change their lives and inside to face their truths with all of the self bullshit removed. Only then will real change begin form the inside out. I learned this from the Patterns of Chronicity work of Andrew T. Austin. You should look him up, his IEMT and MOM modalities offer insights and tools for remodelling and change, without the need for churning up the past or lengthily psychological dialogues.

And yeah, the coaches who take advantage of people at their most vulnerable (and there are a lot of them) are terrible. I actually wish coaching was regulated in the way that psychotherapy were. That would bring a lot of dignity to the industry while also flushing out some of the crappy coaches.

Whoa. Marjan. I LOVE this question. First: though I have a sales page on my site, I actually almost never take one on one clients any more. In most cases, people who want the type of coaching I used to offer would be better served by a therapist, and I encourage them to find a good one.

Thanks Jason I really connected with your comments because armed with the same knowledge for my public speaking debut in Las Vegas back in 2008 on stage at the Orleans Casino I walked to the front of the stage thinking to myself how easy could it be to be more than Tony Robbins simply by realizing that my audience deserve more that the 500 meters it takes for the Robbins effect to wear off so I decided to on not being Tony Robbins.

I have to say that I have studied NLP. It as one of the therapies I use when working with people to help them to make the changes that they need to make. As with anything, it is HOW you use NLP that is important. It can be really a really useful tool to teach people how to communicate more effectively.

As a therapist/healer I never ask any of my Clients to do or go anywhere I have not been and done myself. I always teach self help as I believe that it is important to give people skills so that they are able to look after their own well being and not be reliant on a therapist. In other words, I like to do myself out of business.

From a financial perspecitve, some see a person that fails and has to try again as a more financially rewarding target than those that suceed. The internet marketing inducstry is full of shiny objects that people dream with until the next one arrives.

I also learned to appreciate we have an individual responsibility to take things with a grain of salt and consider context for any advice given. Nearly anything can be both good or bad depending on the context.
