Theunit of trade in Second Life is called the Linden dollar or L$. You can purchase Linden dollars both inworld and online on the LindeX. Linden dollars are used to buy and sell content in Second Life, to purchase land, to tip or pay other Residents for services, and many other things. Some Residents earn enough Linden dollars inside Second Life that they choose to convert their L$ into a US dollar (USD) credit on their Tilia account by selling their Linden dollars on the LindeX.

They can then use their USD account credit to pay for Second Life services like subscriptions or land fees, or they can choose to send those US dollars to their real life accounts via something called a process credit request.

To buy Linden dollars in the Second Life Viewer, click the BUY L$ button next to your current Linden dollar balance. In the BUY L$ window, simply enter the number of Linden dollars you want to buy and click Buy Now. Buying Linden dollars inworld yields the same value as a market buy on the Second Life website.

Market buys and sells are the quickest and easiest ways to purchase or sell Linden dollars on the Second Life website. LindeX automatically matches your order with the best exchange rate. The quoted exchange rate includes transaction fees.

Limit Buys (Best Rate Buy) and sells allow you to specify the amount of Linden dollars and the exchange rate you are willing to accept. LindeX automatically matches up buy and sell offers as they come in.

If you are buying, you will be charged immediately for the purchase. The order may be cancelled by going to LindeX Order History. If the order is canceled, the funds will be returned to your Second Life account's US Dollar balance.

You can earn Linden dollars by selling goods or offering services to other Residents. If you're interested in becoming a merchant, read about Selling in the Marketplace. Check out the Guide to Jobs in Second Life for a tour through some of the jobs our Residents have come up with.

If you bought Linden dollars (L$) through the LindeX as an Instant (Market) buy, they should show up fairly quickly. In certain instances, it can take up to 25 minutes for Linden dollars to arrive after purchase. If they haven't arrived within 25 minutes, please check the Second Life Blog to see if we're already aware of the problem and working to fix it. Chances are good that if it's something that affects a large number of Residents, we're already on it.

When a market order is placed, the order is filled with the lowest-priced L$ available at the time the order is placed. The market is very active, so an order seen as available might be gone by the time you place a new order.

Don't panic! If you just logged in and your L$ amount, shown in the upper-right corner of the screen, says "Loading", it just means your L$ balance hasn't been loaded yet and will eventually appear. Sometimes, this is due to server issues, when we're experiencing heavy load and the data can't be retrieved quickly.

Second Life Residents with a Basic or Plus membership may only view transactions up to 30 days old. However, Premium and Premium Plus members can view transactions up to 90 days old. You can also download all currently viewable transactions as an Excel spreadsheet for later reference. To download your transaction history:

You may choose to credit your US dollar balance via PayPal or Skrill. To process a credit transfer, go to Process Credit. For more information about your options and limitations, see Account Balance and the Tilia FAQ.

There are two modes to use the LindeX at secondlife.com: Basic and Advanced. Basic mode shows simple LindeX market data, and Advanced shows all available LindeX market data, including available rates. To view advanced LindeX market data and be able to use the Best Rate option to buy Linden dollars, edit your L$ Exchange Settings to enable Advanced mode.

If you are buying L$, I assume that you are paying rent, not paying land fees to Linden Lab for property that you own. If you were really paying land fees (tier), you wouldn't need to buy L$, because those are paid in USD, charged directly to your payment method (PayPal).

1. Buy directly from the LindeX, using the link on your dashboard at secondlife.com instead of using the "buy" button in your viewer. Theoretically, both methods should do the same thing. If you are having trouble in the viewer, however, you may have better luck dealing directly with the LindeX.

2. Be sure that your PayPal account actually has enough cash in it to pay for your L$ transaction before you try buying any L$. Again, it shouldn't make any difference, but your bank may be slow to transfer money to PayPal. If so, PayPal will not have a sufficient balance to cover your purchase before Linden Lab closes the transaction.

I actually did consider the Lindex process, and whilst I am desperate to keep my home, I baulk at the "process" fees. As an example, buying say L300 costs me about $6AUD, with the Lindex it is costing me close to $21AUD, and this is assuming it works!

As far as Linden Lab's side of things is concerned, the process fees should be the same either way. They don't charge any more per transaction whether you buy L$ though the LindeX directly or through your viewer. If you are being charged extra process fees, I suspect that they are from your bank. The way to beat that is to put cash in your PayPal balance directly without waiting for your bank to do it. You might want to check out a couple of recent forum threads in General Discussion about this.

Hi, the message I receive after about 10 mins is, and with the header" Linden Dollar Market Buy order declined Notification" .... "An attempt to purchase Linden Dollars for your account via the Lindex page on sl has failed"

You are sadly may be getting impacted by the "money transfer" reclassification that credit card companies forced PayPal etc to do - we thought just American Banks but sounds like the Aussies could now be in the mix too (or this is a total red herring!).

(a) you may wish to add a card directly to Second Life and bypass PayPal to see if that (i) reduces your fees and (ii) works around the money transfer classification issue. Will you let us know how you get on as a lot of us are interested in this particular topic atm!

(b) as mentioned above place cash into your PayPal before using the Lindex and switch your funding method on the agreement (pre-approved/reoccuring payments in PayPal) to fund from your balance first. I would recommend removing your credit card if you can and use your bank account directly. IF you are getting errors (having multiple alts using the same PayPal account may cause some challenges) delete ALL your approved PayPal funding agreements with Tilia/LL (in PayPal directly) and start afresh with one account using one PayPal account so it sets up a new funding agreement linked to your balance and bank and not a credit card.

Let us know what you manage to do and if you see more fees?

Please take a moment to consider if this thread is worth bumping.QuestionsissyfememilyPosted August 31, 2013sissyfememilyResident 2Share Posted August 31, 2013 OK, where does LL get off telling me i can only spend $30 in one day??? Thats first off. I am a 35 year old adult. This is my money. But worse than that...it has now been OVER a day, and it's STILL telling me I can't buy more L....WTF??? I haven't even been able to finish completing my avatar yet, because I need more L...WTF LL???

You might be a 35 Year old Money Launderer...... It's suspicious for a new account or a long time account to all of a sudden start to want to deal with certain thresholds of Lindens / USDs. We all deal with this and are better off for the wait. Anyway here is the schedule for limit increases for accounts that start to Trade or Buy Lindens.:

If the limits listed above don't meet your needs please send a limit review request as described above. Include information about your needs. We'll review your request, and if appropriate create additional limits or make adjustments to the existing limits.

IMVU Credits can't be sold back to IMVU for RL currency.

"IMVU Credits are not redeemable for any sum of real world money or monetary value from IMVU at any time."

You can't sell them to anyone.

"You are hereby prohibited from reselling or distributing Credits without the expressed written consent of IMVU."

Doesn't sound like it would make for a very effective money-laundering process, does it?

Lol, I am 8 months old in Second Life and I am 18 years old in real life, I just want to say how much should I buy for mesh body and head? I know meshbody is freaking expensive so that's why I ask how much amount should I buy?

Figure about 10,000L$ (maybe $20US $40US) will be needed to get a decent head and body, decent being relative. Look around and find what fits you to your liking. Prices and mileage may vary. Granted, mesh heads and bodies are not cheap in price, but in the long run, they do add some prestige and ability to wear mesh clothing.
