Hi all,

last BioHackathon we made good progress with the BridgeDb IMS, noting
that "IMS" also is now used for "regular" identifiers. IMS within Open
PHACTS was a clear name, because IRIs were the only identifiers we had
there.

But in the BridgeDb world, "identifier" is more ambiguous.

I propose to rename BridgeDb IMS from BridgeDb Identifier Mapping
Service to BridgeDb IRI Mapping Service.

It does not solve the question about what IRI mapping is, exactly, but
the old IMS term did not really do that either. That is something we
have to better anyway.

Please let me know what you think.

Hi, do you like citation networks? Already 51% of all citations are
available available for innovative new uses. Join me in asking the
American Chemical Society to join the Initiative for Open Citations
too. SpringerNature, the RSC and many others already did.

This seems a sensible suggestion to me. I’m happy with the renaming.

I agree that the current naming might be confusing. But I also know that a lot of people discuss semantic approaches at a high level and not everyone involved in planning things will even understand what an IRI is, In any case, it sounds like it is extremely technical and might not solve any real-world technical problems.

I would prefer a name like "semantic BridgeDb"

I would prefer to see the IMS as just an interface to BridgeDb and we sell it as BridgeDb. For me, the IMS is just a bit of technical functionality within BridgeDb. Due to that I would suggest that we keep IRI Mapping Service.
