I am really trying to understand this FIPS code thing. I have heard
that there are maps available which show these codes for certain
geographic areas, and not just counties. Supposedly there are codes
for unincorporated areas, cities, and even tribal reservations, (pull-
down 72-76) menu on BridgeWorks. Interestingly when I visit a NOAA
webpage that has National Weather Service information it displays a
FIPS code for my county, (Grays Harbor County) as 53027, yet the
pulldown from BW shows it to be 99027.

Does anyone have any info they mind sharing.

Thanks

Tom:

Sometimes it's best not to get too tied up in some of this more esoteric identification information.  However here is a link to the official site that we get the codes from.  The database includes Latitutes/Longitudes if you want to get location precision.

Also remember FIPS is an acronym for Federal Information Processing Standards of which there are many.  The codes for Item 276 are the FIPS 55 codes.

Bottom line is that 99027 is the correct code for Gray Harbor areas that are not otherwise identified.

Please let me know if I can be of further help.

Thanks,
