Hey hey! Let's all introduce ourselves!

I'm Lillie Chilen, and I've been doing RailsBridge things for about a year. My last name is pronounced "shi-leen" and rhymes with Celine. I do RailsBridge meta-organizing with Rachel Myers, which means we work with venues and organizers to make sure that workshops are happening in SF regularly. For money, I'm a sales engineer at VerticalResponse, where I do about 70% API/developer support for our soap-based API and 30% sales calls. I've appointed myself product manager of Bridge Troll, and will be working with the Sarahs (Mei and Allen) to make sure that we stay focused and don't try to build every feature in the world.

My goals for the software are to make organizing events easier and to have data about how people come back / progress / don't progress. My personal goals are to learn everything I can about product management and UX and apply them to Bridge Troll.

Who are you? What are your goals?

Hi there, I'm Elle Suzuki.  During the day, I'm a Web applications programmer for UC Berkeley, with a focus on Rails+Ruby.

I've volunteered as a TA for a handful of Railsbridge workshops over the past several months.  My goals include contributing significantly to a meaningful and fun OS project, collaborating with other devs, and continuously improving my developer skill set.

Hey.

I'm Stephen Orr, and I've been interested in Ruby since just after I became a professional PHP developer. Funny how these things work - I'd been looking for a framework around which to build applications for my employer, found CakePHP, and then started looking at Rails since it was the original inspiration.

I've still never managed to find a job in the Rails world, and after 6 years I'm still coding in PHP for work. Getting involved with RailsBridge will hopefully teach me some valuable skills about developing as part of an open-source team, and giving back to the community should help me feel better about all the excellent resources I've consumed over the years.

I'm happy to do anything that needs doing, basically :)

Hey all,

I'm Tim Lovett a Rails developer out of Oakland. I'm originally from the Boston area but moved out here two and a half years ago. I only started learning Rails for a job a little over a year ago but before that I was a C# developer for several years. For my job I'm a software engineer at Sparkart (a design agency).

Just looking to help out and get some experience working on an open source project myself,

All,

I'm far away, in Houston, Texas, doing IT and various Ruby tasks for a oil services company here. I'm looking to gain the experience to be able to do freelance Rails work, and also contribute to a good project. I did an ecology internship a few years ago at UC-Berkeley (Suding Lab) and visited San Francisco every weekend, so I know the Bay Area.

Incidentally, I use a Ubuntu virtual machine at my work, and after cloning the project and typing in rails server, I'm getting a number of error messages. I was getting an error I've had w/Ubuntu before, the 'unknown method: open_ssl' problem, a known issue w/Ubuntu. I 'imploded' and reinstalled the newest version of RVM, and that resolved that, but now I'm getting syntax errors that I seem to be progressively resolving.

See here:
before_filter :authenticate_user!, except: [:index, :show]
It's the switching between the :symbol and symbol: that causes the problems. So I'm going through, by hand, and changing it to hashrocket notation, as shown below:
before_filter :authenticate_user!, :except => [:index, :show]

And that seems to be resolving it, little by little, though it's taking a while to go through and make all the replacements. If anyone knows an easier way to resolve this, I'd be happy to hear it.

Also, it's nice to read your stories, and I look forward to working with you. - Julian.

P.S. I saw that the problem was that my default Ruby was 1.8.7, so I changed that to 1.9.3 and resolved it. I was able to type rails server this time and get the site to run. Thanks, Julian.

Hi, folks. I'm Doug May (DougM, for disambiguation), and I've been a RailsBridge volunteer over two years. My strengths include project planning, systems architecture, technical communications, data modeling, process improvement, collaboration solutions, coaching, training, and volunteer empowerment. I took my only undergrad "Information Systems" class at MIT from Grace Hopper back in the '70s, which was enough to get me through much of my career as a techie. I was IS Director for The Hunger Project (THP) for 8.5 years, where volunteer tracking and event management were core competencies, so I'm looking forward to contributing to Bridge Troll. THP's executive team was 3/4 women, and the staff were nearly 70% women, so I feel quite at home at RailsBridge. When I was 7 years old, I promised Mother Nature (Gaia) that I would help us achieve a sustainable human ecology, or die trying, so I have always engaged in "a bit of sustainability on the side" -- watch for the LinkedIn group, forming "soon."

My goals around Bridge Troll include creating a world-class open-source volunteer and event management system, learning how to participate effectively in open-source initiatives, and creating a vehicle for ongoing RailsBridge volunteer (and student) training and engagement.

I live and work in Louisville, Kentucky, where there aren't many Ruby developers.  I would love to meet more people in the Ruby and RoR world.  I also have wanted to contribute to an open-source project for a long time, and I feel like I might be more able to contribute to a project that is somewhat like the work I do at my day job than to one where I would have to learn something very different.  Also, I've been looking for ways to volunteer to help increase diversity in tech, so Bridge Troll seems like a good fit.  I'm very happy to share whatever knowledge I've accumulated about Ruby, Rails, or software development in general, so please reach out if you need anything.

Hi, I'm Shauna.  :)

I run an event series introducing college students to open source called Open Source Comes to Campus.  Our event management is currently pretty messy and decentralized so I've been trying to find a tool that suits our needs.  BridgeTroll seems like it might be just the thing!

I've poked around a bit, and installed it on my own server (pretty painlessly, although an OpenHatcher offered to help me Dockerize it - would there be any interest in that?).  The main changes I'd want to make are around the Chapters.  I think it would be great if there was a customizable text/html field for each chapter where they could link to ways to get involved in that chapter.  For instance, I'd like to put a link to the chapter mailing list where folks are getting to know each other, brainstorming events, etc.  There also seem to be some permissions issues, at least when playing around, where I could change chapter names at will.

I'd also like to allow event organizers to create custom forms for attendees and volunteers, as requested in this issue: https://github.com/railsbridge/bridge_troll/issues/294

I'm happy to work on these features myself, but I've never used Ruby before.  I enjoy pair programming, so if anyone would be interested in pairing with me remotely to make some changes, that'd be awesome.  Otherwise: is there any documentation I'm missing?  (I've read the readme, github wiki, and browsed through the pivotal tracker.)  Any particular suggestions for getting started?

best
Shauna

Hi Shauna,

Thanks for looking into Bridge Troll!

Editing permissions has been a sticky issue, because so far we've wanted to make it so that any user can create/edit an event, without being 'blessed' by an admin. But Location and Chapter permissions are a little trickier. Since we added a "chapter leader" role recently, I've decided to make it so only chapter leaders can edit the chapter name. This change is deployed now as 5cc9f6c4e74bc5dc302c7ad5f30c55a007ea0d28 to reduce the change of J. Random Internet user changing "RailsBridge San Francisco" to "beep beep boop bridge".

I'm not so hot on Docker but if adding a Dockerfile or whatever doesn't disrupt the normal setup process it seems fine.

There hasn't been a lot else done with Chapters yet other than the emailing and the frontpage chapter filtering, so creating pages with extra chapter info is a wide-open feature area.

It sounds like you've read up on all the documents we have available, if you have any questions about other stuff feel free to ask here. Any other things that look like obvious bugs can be added to the Github issues, probably.

Thanks for the welcome, Travis.  Is it possible to have multiple chapter leaders?  We'll likely have several instances of two or more people co-organizing/co-leading an area.

I ran into an issue lately trying to get SMTP set up with my test deploy.  Is it configured to only use sendgrid?  I've got mail via Mandrill set up on my server, which works successfully with my test deploy of Discourse, but have had trouble getting emails to work for BridgeTroll.  That might be my fault's, though - I'm very new to this stuff.

Finally - I like writing documentation, it helps me learn.  If you can give me guidance on how you want your documentation structured, I can likely generate some for you as I explore.

Chapters can have many leaders, so currently any admin or chapter leader can add other chapter leaders to a chapter. It should act the same as how an event organizer can add other organizers to an event.

There's some stuff in the mailer code that's sendgrid-specific right now, we use their proprietary X-SMTPAPI header to send a single mail message that gets multiplexed to many recipients. See https://github.com/railsbridge/bridge_troll/blob/master/app/mailers/event_mailer.rb#L10

The split is currently this:
* RSVP confirmation emails and "you're off the waitlist" emails are sent individually as they occur
* RSVP reminder emails are sent "individually" (in a loop, for every user who needs to be reminded) in a scheduled task
* Post-workshop survey emails are sent "individually" in a loop in whatever web thread that the organizer clicked "send surveys" from
* Ad-hoc "a message from the organizer" emails, unpublished event emails, and new published event emails are sent using X-SMTPAPI.

We can probably change the code to only try to use X-SMTPAPI when we know our backend is Sendgrid. Then we would have to choose to either send those emails in a loop or use whatever other proprietary X-SMTPAPI analogue exists for that vendor. If we had to use a loop, it would also be important to try to move more of the email sending into background jobs.

As for documentation, I don't have any opinion; I've avoided writing any of that for fear that it would get out of date.

Thanks for the details re: SendGrid. I'm generally not a fan of the company - as far as I know, they've never apologized for firing Adria Richards after PyCon2013.  If we adopt BridgeTroll, I will probably try to swap it out for something else, although if it ends up being a hassle we may just adopt it anyway.  I'm not a purist (mostly).

The current issue is really that the lack of email capability is preventing me from testing some things out.  The staged version has been very helpful in terms of seeing what capacities exist, though, so thanks to those who maintain that.

re: documentation - is BridgeTroll in very active development?  If everyone held off for fear of getting out of date, no one would document anything.  :)

What kind of documentation are you thinking of, Shauna? More for users or contributors or some other audience? I've been wishing we had more explanations of exactly what Bridge Troll does / how it works on the site itself — how to use the section arranger, for example, or a list of all the places we send email for you automatically.

As for contributors, Bridge Troll is in pretty active development, but mostly by Travis, with sometimes pull requests from other people. So he hasn't really had a pressing need to document things for himself, but this could also be something that's slowing down others from getting more involved.

PS: Super psyched that you might use Bridge Troll for OpenHatch stuff!!!!!

What mail provider would you want to use instead of SendGrid?

I investigated MailChimp's Mandrill, and it seems their BCC-style email blast solution is to just have you set the standard "to:" field with an array of addresses. Mandrill then modifies the outgoing messages so that each individual recipient cannot see the other "to:" addresses (depending on the value of X-MC-PreserveRecipients), as described here: http://help.mandrill.com/entries/21751312

So for SendGrid/Mandrill integration particularly, the process would now be
* Modify config/production.rb to use different SMTP settings depending on whether ENV['SENDGRID_USERNAME'] or ENV['MANDRILL_USERNAME'] is set
* Modify set_recipients in mailers/base_mailer.rb so it looks more like this:

  def set_recipients(recipients)
    if ENV['SENDGRID_USERNAME']
      # Sendgrid API allows a single SMTP request to send multiple
      # email messages. Change this to something else if we move
      # away from Sendgrid.
      # http://sendgrid.com/docs/API_Reference/SMTP_API/

      headers['X-SMTPAPI'] = {
        to: recipients
      }.to_json
      headers[:to] = 'in...@bridgetroll.org' # supposedly required even with X-SMTPAPI
    elsif ENV['MANDRILL_USERNAME']
      # Mandrill automatically hides the rest of the 'to' addresses from individual
      # recipients unless 'X-MC-PreserveRecipients' is true
      # http://help.mandrill.com/entries/21751312

      headers['X-MC-PreserveRecipients'] = false
      headers[:to] = recipients
    end
  end

But if you're imagining using a different transactional email provider (Mailgun? Postmark?) you might have to use yet another header variation.

I was thinking of documentation for contributors, although I'm still in that nebulous getting-to-know-the-project phase where it's not clear to me precisely what's important to know and what's not.  If I'm contributing, I'll probably also be using, so I could generate both kinds of documentation.

On a deployment environment like Heroku, environment variables like MANDRILL_USERNAME are sent through to the Rails server process based on the addons that you've configured. If you're using Heroku but have a separate Mandrill account, you can tell Heroku to set individual variables like MANDRILL_USERNAME with `heroku config:set MANDRILL_USERNAME=some_username` on the command line.

For local development, or any other deployment tactic that doesn't set any particular environment variables on the rails process, you can define key/value pairs in an .env file in the project directory as seen here: https://github.com/railsbridge/bridge_troll#working-with-external-services (this works because of the dotenv-rails gem)

I've defined a few different variables in the config.action_mailer.smtp_settings variable in config/environments/production.rb. Should those be removed and set via the .env file instead?  I'm not using Heroku at the moment, just a linode.

Generally you want anything that pertains to a specific deployment of the app (external service username/passwords, etc) to be defined via env variables. I would imagine a version of production.rb that supports either Sendgrid or Mandrill might look something like this:

if ENV['SENDGRID_USERNAME']
  config.action_mailer.smtp_settings = {
    :address        => 'smtp.sendgrid.net',
    :port           => '587',
    :authentication => :plain,
    :user_name      => ENV['SENDGRID_USERNAME'],
    :password       => ENV['SENDGRID_PASSWORD'],
    :domain         => ENV['HOST_URL']
  }
end

if ENV['MANDRILL_USERNAME']
  config.action_mailer.smtp_settings = {
    :port =>           '587',
    :address =>        'smtp.mandrillapp.com',
    :user_name =>      ENV['MANDRILL_USERNAME'],
    :password =>       ENV['MANDRILL_APIKEY'],
    :domain =>         ENV['HOST_URL'],
    :authentication => :plain
  }
end

Hello all,

I've been adapting Bridge Troll for OpenHatch and it's gone really smoothly so far.  You've built a fantastic piece of software.

One question: is there a way to seed an admin user without seeding a bunch of fake events, etc?  I want to give myself admin access to our production deployment of BridgeTroll without creating a bunch of extraneous events and users.

I'm not sure how making someone an admin is tied to seeding other things —  since there isn't a UI for admin-ifying users, you have to mark any user as an admin using the console. Does that help?

By console, you mean command line/terminal?  Can you give me a quick explanation of how to do that?

I mostly need to make *myself* an admin right now, although I'm sure it'll be useful to adminify others.  In development, I just seeded the first admin and logged in using that seed info.

Sure!
  • You'll want to open up a Rails console (run rails c) from the machine that your app is deployed on. This will give you direct access to your database.
  • From in the Rails console, find your user, probably by using an ActiveRecord query like u = User.find_by_email("shau...@gmail.com")
  • Update the admin column to be true instead of false (u.admin = true), and save (u.save)
Sorry if that's too much detail or detail in the wrong places :D

Thanks!  Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to sign up at all on our production server (on heroku), although there were no problems with this on the dev environment, so it's got to be something with our setup.  I'll CC in Asheesh.

If you're deploying on Heroku, you should be able to run `heroku run rails c` to get a console going -- if your Heroku account has been given access to the deployed app, and if your SSH keys are on Heroku.

Sorry to be unclear.  I've stalled because of an unknown issue with our deployment, where signing up leads to an error message.  Unless that could possibly be caused by not having a seeded admin?

There are a lot of things that could cause signing up to be crashing, but probably not anything to do with the existence of an admin. Debugging production-only problems on Heroku has always been a bit of a drag for me; you can run `heroku logs -n 1000` to see the last thousand lines of logs.

What you really want is to get the actual exception from the logs that you're seeing on signup; I imagine it would be a config problem potentially related to Devise or email.

Hi Shauna,

Another debugging idea is to run in production mode locally -- then you can look at the log output easily on the command line, and poke at your app a little more easily.  You'll typically need to precompile your assets for that to work:

rake assets:precompile
rails server -e production

Good luck!

Asheesh was able to fix the problem, which was an issue with outbound mail.  Lillie, your instructions for the rails console were perfect - I am all set.  For now, anyway!

Okay, new question!

How are admin privileges for editing and destroying chapters and events controlled?  I've created a non-admin test user who can edit or destroy chapters that it did not create.  How can I change this?  I noticed that on BridgeTroll proper, I (a non-admin user) cannot edit anything.  There are three chapters with no events or locations that I can apparently destroy, although I have not actually clicked the 'ok' on the destroy pop up, so maybe it would block me.

Permissions are a little tricky.

Any registered user can create an event, location, or chapter.

Events can be destroyed by anyone listed as an organizer of that event.

Locations can be destroyed by any registered user as long as they're not yet associated with an event. Events associated with an event can never be destroyed, and can only be updated by someone who has organized a published event at that venue.

Chapters can be destroyed by any registered user as long as they're not yet associated with a location. Chapters associated with a location can never be destroyed, and can only be updated by a chapter leader.

In addition, a site admin can do any of the above actions.

If a user can update a chapter they didn't create or get granted leadership to, it might be a bug.

Thanks, Travis. Quick question: how do you delete an event?  I see an option to flag as spam, but as I created something as a test I don't want to flag myself as a spammer.  Can do this from the rails console if necessary, but would prefer to learn the GUI way.

There is definitely not a GUI way to delete an event, so the Rails console is your friend. So far I think it's only come up once or twice :D

I didn't major in CS and my first programming class in SF was Railsbridge, so having gotten so much out of it, I'm hoping to help out now that I know a lot more than I did when I first walked in!

My goal is to contribute to tracking students progress and getting an idea of where students are dropping off / how to keep them going! I'd also like to help develop short side curricula on different topics (if you guys are interested in something like that?)

We definitely love feedback / stories from on-the-ground use of the app — to date, almost all the development of Bridge Troll has happened by people in SF with a lot of experience running workshops, so we'd love to hear about what didn't work for y'all.

I went to a RailsBridge workshop last year, and I was blown away by the event! I was amazed how the volunteers were friendly and helpful, and ruby enthusiasts/newbies/experts/everything in between were excited to be there. I fortuitously met one of the volunteers at Women Who Code event at Huge in Brooklyn, and she suggested about becoming a volunteer and an active member within this community. Now here I am!

I would definitely like to contribute and be a great resource within this group. I can be your hype person! My skillsets are pretty diverse - I have experience in design, user experience/research, and front-end dev. Cheers to a good year of awesome works in RailsBridge!

The most immediate goal I want to pursue is to actually contribute to some open source projects more.  Despite how easy that sounds, I have had a hard time finding something that I thought I could contribute to.  BridgeTroll is one of the few projects I've seen that has some kind of a roadmap for the things that need to be built, so this looked like a good place to start.

I worked hosting an even using Bridge Troll with Shauna GM and the Open Hatch homies, so its nice to be on the developer side of things now. We have a small MobileBridge community, but a bit short on leaders... if you were willing to help organize something, we could help find a venue and other coders.  It could be a workshop or an evening or weekend hack session.

We also have a Discourse forum, which needs a bit more activity!  I can answer some Swift questions or pull in others who have more experience if needed.

Hi All,

I am Jane Sebastian and I am a professional full stack developer in San Francisco and I have been a dedicated RailsBridge volunteer mostly teaching/organizing/doing whatever needs to be done for four plus years for the San Francisco and soon to formally exist East Bay chapter.

Lately I have been stepping up to help out more with Bridge Troll specifically a redesign that should be rolling out some time this month.

If there are people who want to help out with that contact me (ja...@betatetra.com) and I could likely find something for you to do. We won't be posting the work with "help wanted" tags since we need to manage this project a bit more than that allows. Right now it is mostly front end work but as we continue there could be some back end work as well.

My goals are all about just helping RailsBridge and Bridge Troll to continue to do the job they already rock at which is making tech more accessible and welcoming to all and helping students and volunteers level up technically/otherwise. Since I have taught 30+ times I have seen first hand the many people who start from no development knowledge and go on to become professional developers or entrepreneurs who create their own apps or are just empowered to know more about the tech side of their current work. And how many of those people then give back too. :)

Stoked to be a part of all this and grateful for the work everyone here is doing. :)
-Jane

ps I can't resist so I also have to say if anyone is thinking they would ever want to organize a workshop in SF and/or East Bay please contact me as well.  It is mega fun to do and a stellar way to network/connect with wonderful people and companies.

Hello, I am John Stevenson and I help run ClojureBridge London and London Clojurians. We are just planning out 10th ClojureBridge event.

We are hoping to use BridgeTroll to manage our events for the first time, as Meetup.com and eventbrite are all a bit lacking.

We have put a lot of effort into the content of our course and have recently been trying to make it easier for anyone to run a ClojureBridge event (although there is still some work to do).

We are also looking to create a better website to show case what students can learn at ClojureBridge and be a better encouragement for them to join.

Thank you
John.

Hi! My name is Lauren and I'm hoping to help out. I'm new to Ruby but have experience in C, Perl, and Python. I'm more of a sysadmin by prior trade, and am looking to sharpen my software development skills. I'll poke around in the Issues list, but if there's anything someone needs done urgently, please point me in that direction!

Thanks,
Lauren

Hi Lauren!

Great to hear from you and thanks for wanting to help! You are stepping up at just the right time since there is a lot of interest in revitalizing Bridge Troll as an open source project currently including a possible partnership with Ruby Together.

I will do what I can to get and keep you in that loop but your plan to go through the issues list and start from there sounds like a great start. :)

Hope all is exceedingly well with you and yours,
-Jane
