Hi, everyone!
I wanted to introduce myself in case you haven’t seen me post much.
My name is Rachel and I am a chapter leader/organizer in New York City. We started organizing RailsBridges in NYC at the beginning of 2013 and we’ve built up a great team of teachers, volunteers, and organizers in the NYC area over the years.
We've been using Bridge Troll extensively to run our workshops and have seen how necessary of a tool it is!
When I found myself available to spend some time working on open source projects, I started pairing with Sarah Allen and learned more about the needs of the Bridge Troll project. I also came upon the opportunity to apply to Ruby Together in February to see if they could sponsor me in spending some dedicated paid time on helping to address specific issues of the Bridge Troll project and help facilitate more movement and community building over 12 weeks. If you haven’t heard of Ruby Together before, it is a non-profit looking to help support critical infrastructure in the Ruby Community like Bundler and RubyGems. They have a project proposal application to nominate yourself to work on a project. (You can see my application here!) Spoiler alert, I got accepted when they reviewed applications in April!
What does that mean?
I’ve been chatting with Sarah Allen to gather her feedback on where I can be most helpful based on the original project timeline (which you can see in my application) and this week started the process of kicking off how I am going to communicate with the Bridge Foundry, Ruby Together, and Bridge Troll contributors communities.
My main focus is going to be about talking to past and current contributors (you!) to find out your experience working with the Bridge Troll code base and how you feel about the processes (or non-processes) currently in place. I hope we will discover ways in which we can make contributions to the code base painless and more inviting as well as foster a real community of code contributors and code reviewers.
Additionally, I will reach out to members of the different Bridge Boards and organizing communities to discuss their feelings about Bridge Troll, whether they use it or not, and talk about their pain points about creating workshops via the platform.
As I am interviewing, I will be going through PRs and Issues listed on GitHub and step through the process as a “new” contributor. Ideally, this will pinpoint where we have bottlenecks and allow me to document my progress along the way to create a wealth of information for the community and for those looking to contribute.
I am looking forward to meeting all of you and (hopefully!) making your lives easier. I’ll be reaching out individually but if you’re super jazzed to start chatting right away, you can always find some time on my calendar here: https://bookme.rachelober.com/bridge-troll-feedback-session
