Dear Jack,
I am involved in a project at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. As you may know, the museum has an exhibit called Old Ben #17 which gives the visitor an idea of what it may have been like to work in a 1930s coal mine. The visitors actually are given the sensation of entering a working coal mine where they enter through an elevator that makes you feel like you are actually going down into the earth. As you get out of the elevator you walk into a “coal mine” where they ride in a small underground mine train, learn about what it was like working in a mine, see some of the underground mining equipment, etc.
Our company is involved in producing a few new video pieces and doing the soundscape for the underground mine experience. One of our charges is to produce 3-4 short video segments that the visitors can view while waiting in line to enter the mine. I came across your new CD while doing research online. I was captured by the feel and lyrics of the songs on your CD collection. My initial idea would be to propose to the museum that we use a combination of archival mine footage and still photos edited together with the music from your CD. I need to “pitch” the idea to my museum client next Monday morning (Jan 14) and I love the idea of using a few of the songs from your CD. We want to create a mood for the museum visitor of what it was like mining in the 1930s/1940s and I believe we can tell a compelling story with the combination of strong visuals and audio.
My question relates to the rights to use some of the music from your CD for the exhibit. I believe that at the end of each segment we could credit the artist if necessary.
I just really like the music and I believe it could help tell the stories we want to tell about early mining.
If you go to www.msichicago.org and click on exhibits then on the Coal Mine, you can get an idea about the exhibit. It will be closing soon for the renovation and the media that we would produce would be a small part of the overall renovation. I got your contact information from the Ohio University website.
On Amazon’s site they have clips of each of your songs so I will listen to them and get an idea of which ones we may want to use. I will probably purchase the CD as well but since I need to pitch the idea Monday, I’m not sure I will get it by then so I will depend on the clips.
Thank you for even considering this opportunity! I will also contact my guy at the museum regarding the store. This is where I picked up on my email after our call. Thank you for your time and I’ll be in touch. If you do get some info from your producer regarding usage please drop me an email. The rights “thing” will be important to the museum.
Kind regards,
Steve
