Public health officials in the Lenowisco Health District have recently confirmed and are treating two cases of MRSA skin infections in the UVa-Wise campus community. They have also begun treatment for two probable cases awaiting confirmation of culture results.
MRSA, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is a type of “staph” bacteria that is commonly found on human skin and in noses. MRSA infections are a growing concern across the nation, state, and in the region. As a result, we each need to increase our diligence in taking simple common sense steps to protect ourselves and our families, including:
· regular handwashing
· showering after contact sports
· not sharing personal items
· covering exposed cuts and/or wounds.
If you have a sore or cut that becomes red, oozes, causes pain or isn’t healing, please see Sheila Cantrell, campus nurse, in the Center for Student Development on the lower-level of Cantrell Hall, or visit your primary care physician immediately. If you have questions or other concerns, you may contact Ms. Cantrell at (276) 376-1005 or scan...@uvawise.edu.
For more information on MRSA, visit the Virginia Department of Health’s website at http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/Edpidemiology/factsheets/Methicillin.htm .

Thanks.
One of the women here at work also called Powell Valley middle School yesterday to confirm a rumor that there was a case of staph at the school. They said it was true.
They also called John last night and said there are also two new cases being reported at Appalachia, in addition to the ones from a few weeks ago.
