Subject: BOROUGH WIDE
DRINKING BAN -SUPPORT to stop the liquor licenses
RESIDENT – Objecting to the BRICK LANE area having
become a destination for revelers attracted to the vast collection of late night
drinking venues.
From the Truman Brewery towards Brick Lane North, through Arnold Circus, up to
Shoreditch High Street, into Hoxton and towards Old Street, local residents
have seen a complete decline in their neighbourhood as a relentless drinking culture has been permitted to
establish itself. Residents, visitors, retail businesses, children and families are forced to accept
as normal, drinkers who congregate at these all day bars then continue
throughout the night and further into the early hours of the morning.
This relentless social drinking is detrimental to those that participate
and those that witness the inevitable
drunken behaviour that follows.
Large groups congregate outside licensed
premises blocking the pavement, whilst others hustle to get in or
jostle to go out again to smoke or make phone calls. Invariably the
doormen are unable to do more than oblige and open / close a door. The noise
generated by bars, their clientele and the movement of groups towards different
venues is relentless, continuing until the last bar in the area has finally
closed! Permitting these license hours
throughout the week has destroyed our neighbourhood and set a precedence for
all the other bars in the area to follow. We all deserve the right
to enjoy the night-time without being
subjected to the solid drinking culture that has engulfed our
streets.
The Government having introduced the idea of relaxed alcohol licenses has now
realized that the stagger approach to drink-up please has not curbed the rising
problems of excessive drinking. Evidence to this has been widely
documented in press, media and TV coverage, confirming that sensible controlled
drinking has not been adopted and tighter
controls need to be brought in and enforced.
Within the last several years my peaceful family home has been directly
affected by the saturation of bars that have been permitted to establish
themselves on the junction with Brick Lane and Bethnal Green Road; namely
THE VERGE
CASA BLUE
AUSTIN by ART CANDY
THE REDCHURCH BAR
These are a sample selection of the bars that are situated within 5 / 10 / 15
/20 metres of my home and collectively they help to keep the neighbourhood
alive until 4am. I would welcome a review and license revoke of premises
that solely trade on offering intoxicating liquor and cocktails.
My family has lived and worked in this immediate area for over twenty years, we
support any initiative to ensure the Brick Lane area does NOT deteriorate
further into becoming a 24-hour alcohol economy, our neighborhood is vibrant,
creative and an all-ages friendly destination. Tower Hamlets should
promote family friendly pursuits, recreational initiatives, healthier economies
and a greener contribution within this prime city fringe area.
For reference, attached are various letters that have been sent over the years
to officials requesting support to STOP this culture.
Please confirm this OBJECTION has been received.
THANK YOU
